Chapter four: New discoveries
Making my way to my last period class, I took a seat and let out a sigh of relief. It’s almost the end of the day, but I have a detention to fulfill though. Slumping in my seat, I pulled out my notebook and flipped to an empty page and started to doodle. My page started to fill with random strokes here and there as I concentrated more on the mindless scribbles rather than the teacher. But as the teacher called out a question to me I answered without a second thought.
“What are the most recognized plays written by Shakespeare? Evelyn?” Mrs. Baudiline mused as she peered at me.
I scoffed and replied “A midnight summers dream, Romeo and Juliet as well as Macbeth.” After answering I abruptly stopped my sketching. I blinked at how I was able to answer that question without a second thought. Maybe I really am turning into a nerd!
Shaking my head nervously to myself, I resumed my drawing. After answering that question when Mrs. Baudiline thought I wasn’t paying attention, she left me alone for the rest of the period. When the work was assigned and she said anything that wasn’t done was for homework; I started to work through it quietly. I hate having homework on Friday’s because you have to make time for it. But if I don’t, I could always finish it in the detention room; I thought bitterly.
Unfortunately, she must have been wanting to get back at me so she had assigned so much work that it was near to impossible to finish it! I worked as hard as I could through each question, making sure to scan over it once through with it. As I had suspected, the home bell went off before I could complete all my work. Packing up all my books, I trudged to my locker and took out any other books I would need for my homework over the weekend.
I slammed my locker and started to wonder around the halls aimlessly, looking for any signs of a detention room. Finally I came across nothing so I opened a random door and walked in. Feeling up the wall for the switch, I flicked it on once I found it. As the light flooded the room, I took a good look around at the contents in it. There were instruments scattered around the room with chairs in front of them. My eyes were instantly drawn to the large sleek grand piano in the centre.
I walked over and dropped my bag into a nearby chair. I took a seat at the stool and ran my fingers along the smooth white keys. Playing a few notes to get myself back into the feeling of playing, I tapped a few keys to test it out. When the deep rich sound was produced, it sent chills up my spine. I hadn’t played in a long time and to hear the sounds again is pretty refreshing. Taking off my beanie and glasses, I shook my hair out of my bun. Putting my blue hair elastic onto my wrist, I shoved them into my bag and brought out my contacts. Slipping them in, I looked up and blinked a few times to get used to the feeling.
Satisfied finally, I bent my hand back to crack my knuckles before doing a short C major scale. Once my hands were all warmed up, I played a short little tune. As time progressed on I played little bits and pieces from my memory. From time to time my wrist would feel a sting of pain, but I got used to it. Once you learn how play guitar you become accustomed to pain in your wrist.
Speaking of guitars, I shifted a bit on the stool to find a few of them on stands. My hands flew from the keys as I rushed towards my favourite instrument in the world. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt one of these... I thought to myself as I marvelled at the smooth wooden body. Testing out a few chords, I began to strum softly. All worries about detention flew out the window as I began to lose myself in the music.
Time passed by quickly as I put some beats from my iPod on and I jammed out with the guitar. I played not only acoustic, but electric as well. Somehow I found some pretty head banging music and played along with the electric. A shrill ring cut off the Bob Marley music that I had my head bobbing drunkly to and resulted in me jumping. As it continued to ring, I rushed to my iPod to check what it was but it seems as if my unluckiness has come back because as soon as I took those few steps, I made contact with the ground.
I groaned as I heaved myself up and made another attempt toward my iPod. Of course I didn’t learn to the first time and had another run in with the floor. I seem to be seeing you very often eh? I asked the tiles as I stood up for the third time. Learning from my previous encounters, I didn’t move this time. Instead and looked down to figure out what was causing me to repeatedly greet the floor. I face palmed myself once the discovery of why I kept tripping became clear.
In my frenzy of jumping all over the place like a spastic monkey, I had gotten my legs tangled up in the cords so that every time I took a few steps, they would tighten and send me tumbling down. I shook my head as I thought to myself, I'm going crazy! I talk to myself and I can’t even take notice of wires wrapped around my legs. God help me.
Untangling my legs from a plethora of wires, I made my way over to my iPod to shut the god damn annoying shrieking emitting from it. As I slip my finger off the screen, my eyes widened at what the noise was alerting me. As I was busy letting loose and jamming, I completely forgot about getting home; let alone getting what I needed for our sleep over. Since the alarm was originally set for a few minutes after my supposed detention, I still had a few hours before they arrived at eight.
As I tidied up my little mess in the new found room, I pushed any thoughts of what my consequences of missing my detention would be to the dark recesses of my cranium. After the room looked like it hadn’t been touched-well asides from the unsettled dust that is- I pulled my beanie and glasses back on just to be safe. Taking one last look over my shoulder, I shut off the lights and closed the door softly.
Walking away from the door, I looked around trying to find my way to any familiar ways. After a few unsure twists and turns, I found a familiar path and I was on my way. Immerging into the parking lot, I was hit with the chilled November air. It was looking pretty warm this morning and on the weather but right now tells me otherwise. I pulled my wool sweater out of my bag and quickly pulled it on as I made my way towards my car.
It wasn’t that cold in the car, so I rolled down the windows to let the cool air circulate in the car. I guess the hidden music room was really good for me because for the first time in a long time I wasn’t driving home in tears. A small smile spread across my face at this realization as I pulled up to a stop light. I know I shouldn’t be breaking the law or anything, but I had to pull out my phone and send a quick text to my dad apprising him of me getting there in a little while.
I still need to pick up some things for the sleepover at Wal-Mart so I made my way to the nearest one. Getting out, I took my purse along with my. Scanning the aisles for what I needed, I picked up some lotion, junk food, water balloons, chocolate, face masks and some other random materials. As I stood in line waiting to pay for my purchases, I thought over what I had in mind. My good mood was getting better and better as the day wore on and I have to say, it was one of the best Fridays I’ve ever endured.
