Prologue
“Well, well, well; look what we have here? Isn’t it Miss Evelyn Matthews?” I heard a voice from above me sneer. The voice belonged to none other than the arrogant player of the school; Chase Daniels. If thrashing my books and papers out of my hand into the hallway wasn’t enough, he had to start teasing me.
“Why do you wear a beanie all the time?” he questioned as he tapped his index finger on his chin. Then acting like he knew why, he answered his own question.
“Because you either have no hair or are too afraid to show the revolting locks that you call hair.” He said, laughing at his cruel joke.
Shaking my head discreetly, I chose not to answer as I picked up everything hurriedly; trying to rearrange the scattered loose leafs sprawled on the ground. Once I had everything picked up from the floor, I hugged them to my chest and turned on my heel to head off towards first period; which was science.
“Nerds will always be nerds.” Were Chase’s final words to me as he shoved me into the lockers and walked away, laughing with his friends.
Rubbing my shoulder where the impact from the lockers was, I quietly scurried to my first period; trying to get there before the last bell rang. Pulling my beanie over my red hair tightly, I pushed my thickly framed black glasses up the bridge of my nose. Walking briskly, I slid into a seat at the back of the room just as the bell rang. I let out a sigh of relief and opened my notebook to start taking notes from the board as Mr. Calerfrank started to speak and scribble onto the board.
Quickly writing down the assignment tasks, I started on my work when he was finish giving instructions. As I was working through the questions, I was hit countless time in the back of the head with crumpled pieces of paper and spit balls but I tried my best to ignore them. After I was finished the questions, I tapped my red varnished nails on the desk as they itched to run through my red locks.
Deciding that if I didn’t keep my hands busy, they would rip off my beanie right now, I pulled out the book I’m currently reading and fixed my glasses. My eyes zoomed through the lines on the pages as I got deeper and deeper into the story line. As I progressed into my story, I started to ignore all the materials being thrown at me. I was so engrossed in the book that I didn’t notice when the teacher asked me a question and was awaiting my answer.
It wasn’t until he walked up to my desk and hit it with his pointer that I looked up in fright. He had a stern look on his face and made a gesture to the board. I was embarrassed that I hadn’t been listening and my cheeks took no time is broadcasting that to the class as they all their eyes trained on me.
“Um, could you repeat the question please?” I squeaked.
“Only because you rarely blank out, but next time pay attention in class and set aside the leisurely books for another time.” He answered sharply.
“The question was asking if you mix a solute and a solvent, what is the more likely outcome of a perfect solution or a suspension?”
“Well, it depends on what the solute is and what the solubility is per hundred grams.” I answered carefully, not one hundred percent sure if I answered his question correct.
“Not the answer I was looking for, but an excellent point.” He said, moving onto another student to answer the question. I let out a relieved sigh and slumped back into my seat; trying to pay attention this time around and not draw anymore unwanted attention to myself.
