First day back to school after a long and boring summer. Deena arrived at school with Josh and just like every other morning, they split up and go their separate ways.
-See you later, Sir Silence., joked Deena.
Deena joined Kate and Simon, her two best friends. One cheerleader, the other a class clown weirdo. She loved them nonetheless. They met through the football games that they had to attend to. Deena was a drummer in the band, Kate the captain of the cheerleading squad and Simon was the dorky team mascot.
It all started at a cheerleading practice or more like tryouts. Deena promised to Kate to drive her home afterwards, so she stayed on the bleachers, sitting at the very bottom. Kate and some cheerleaders showed the newbies the choreography that they would have to copy and show them after giving them 10 minutes of practice. Deena was doing her English homework when she felt someone staring at her. She looked down at the newbies, only to find a blonde girl quickly looking away while she was stretching. Deena smirked and looked back down at her homework.
-Alright! Get in line. You only get once shot, so give it all you got. I believe in you., smiled Kate as she walked to the radio, starting the song.
As the song started, the people who were trying out started to dance Kate's choreography, while the younger girl observed them, judging their moves. She was admiring the blonde girl dancing, she had rhythm. Deena decided that it was enough English for the day and closed her book, looking at the girls dancing. She didn't like checking out girls, she would feel all weird and creepy. But that blonde girl just caught her eye, which the unknown girl noticed. She noticed Deena, and tried to focus on her dance. The brunette smirked and winked at the girl who then moved the wrong foot, twisting her ankle and stumbling to the floor. Kate immediately went up to her, the blonde girl holding her ankle. Deena got up to see the whole thing better.
-Are you okay?, asked Kate.
-It hurts., groaned the girl.
-What's your name?, wondered Kate.
-Sam., replied the blonde girl.
-Well, Sam, my friend over there is gonna get you some ice, okay?, said the brunette, looking at Deena who nodded and basically ran away.
-No, no. I wanna make the team. Please let me continue., replied Sam.
-Not like that. Listen, how about we have a little conversation after the tryouts?, suggested Kate.
-Okay, fine., sighed the blonde girl.
Deena came back running with some ice. She went up to Sam and placed the ice on her ankle. The blonde girl grabbed the ice from Deena.
-I'm not a kid. I can do this alone., said Sam firmly.
Deena looked at Kate who shrugged.
-Oh, so you're gonna be able to get up and walk to the bleachers on your own as well?, asked Deena raising an eyebrow.
Sam didn't answer and avoided their gaze.
-Yeah, that's what i thought. Kate, continue with your tryouts, I'll take care of this one., said Deena sighing.
She grabbed Sam's arm and put it around her shoulders, helping her up, making her lean on her. Together they walked to the bleachers.
-Sorry about that., apologized Deena.
-About what?, frowned Sam.
-You falling and hurting yourself., elaborated the brunette.
-It's not your fault., replied the other girl.
-It kinda was., chuckled Deena.
-I don't know what you're referring to., said Sam firmly, looking away.
-I winked at you., replied the brunette.
-Okay, so? I certainly did not fall because of that., scoffed Sam.
-Okay. Good luck with Kate later., replied Deena.
Deena left the girl alone, not wanting to deal with that bitchy attitude. She sat back down at her previous spot, grabbing her backpack and opening her book again. What was her problem? She was the one staring at her earlier! Deena sighed. It wasn't her first time dealing with a bitchy girl. But something about this one felt different. She knew it wouldn't be their last interaction.
After the dance was done, Kate made a list of who made the team and said she would hang it in the hallway the next day. The girls went home, leaving Kate, Deena and Sam. Deena packed her stuff and was ready to leave while Kate walked up to Sam.
-How's your ankle?, wondered the younger girl.
-Better., smiled Sam.
-Good. Now, listen, you have the determination and the moves, but i can't let you on the team just like that. How about we wait until your ankle looks normal again and then I'll let you try out again?, suggested Kate sitting down next to her.
-Okay, that sounds good. Thank you., replied the blonde girl.
-Alright, ready for your ride home?, said Deena joining them.
-Yeah. But first I'll help this one go to the locker room and change., said Kate.
-No offense, but you're quite small. I might as well walk alone., chuckled Sam.
-Or Deena could help you?, suggested Kate looking at her friend.
-It's fine., replied the blonde girl.
-Yeah, she needs to watch out. My touch could burn her skin., scoffed Deena rolling her eyes.
-Whatever., said Sam getting up, groaning and clearly in pain.
-Okay, I don't know what all of this is about, but let her help you., replied Kate.
-No, it's fine., sighed the blonde girl.
-Well, as your future captain, I order you to let her help you., said the younger girl.
-But you're not my captain., chuckled Deena.
-No, but I'm your friend and I know that whenever someone needs help, you're the first one to volunteer. So shut up and help her to the locker room., replied Kate smiling.
-You're mean., pouted the older brunette.
-I know. But you still love me., smiled the younger girl.
-Sure., chuckled Deena walking up to Sam.
The blonde girl was still not quite convinced but she wanted to make the team, so she simply pushed away her thoughts and put her arm around Deena's shoulders, leaning on her. They walked to the locker room in silence, Deena opening the door for the blonde girl. Once inside, she helped her sit down on a bench.
-I would ask you if you need help to get changed but I already know your answer. So just let us know if you need anything, we'll be out the door waiting., said the brunette.
-Waiting for what?, frowned Sam.
-For you., replied Deena.
-No, you can leave. I'll take the bus home., said the blonde girl.
-Yeah, no. We'll be waiting., shrugged the brunette walking out the door, not giving Sam a chance to protest.
Usually, she would have picked a fight with a girl like that. Clearly homophobic. But she didn't. She stayed calm. Something about this girl intrigued her. Little did she know, that Sam was thinking the same thing. Something about Deena was just so intriguing. She didn't want to be around her but she also did. It was very confusing.
