Deena drove home feeling angrier than ever. What the fuck was that woman's problem? Once home, she just went to her room, ignoring her dad's mess and closed the door, laying down on her bed. What a great way to start the school year. She spent the rest of the day in her room, isolating herself and resting. Josh came to her room to check on her and brought her half a pizza which she didn't eat. That's when she fell asleep.
-Wake up! I don't wanna be late!, screamed Josh as he shook his sister trying to get her to wake up.
-Shut uuuuup., groaned Deena.
-We have school, so get moving., replied the brother satisfied that she was finally awake.
-Yay. School., said Deena sarcastically.
She sat up and sighed. She quickly picked an outfit, put her shoes on, brushed her teeth and walked out with the keys, seeing her brother waiting for her at her car.
-God how can you be so motivated to go to school?, wondered the brunette as she got in the car.
-I'm not motivated. But I also don't want to be late., shrugged Josh.
-Whatever., sighed Deena starting the car and driving off.
Once at school, they separated once again, just like every morning. Deena went to meet up with Kate and Simon, yet to her surprise there was a new person with them. Well, not entirely new.
-What is she doing here?, asked Deena as she arrived.
-Talking with us?, frowned Simon questioning her friend's attitude.
-Yeah no shit., replied the brunette looking at Sam.
-What's your problem with her? She's nice., sighed Kate.
-Oh no, no. There is not problem. I simply made a promise to keep my dyke ass away from her., scoffed Deena walking off and going into the building.
Her friends just stood there confused, looking at Sam for some kind of explanation but the blonde girl simply shrugged and walked off as well.
Deena had chemistry as first lesson that day. She liked chemistry. They would do experiments which she adored. And no one ever wanted to the work with her so since there were 23 students in their class and that they had to made teams of two, she was always alone. She didn't mind. At least she had a moment of peace. Or so she thought.
-Hello class., said Mr. Slater.
-Hi Mr. Slater., replied the class in union.
-We have a new student joining us. She changed from art to chemistry so be nice to her and help her if you can., said the teacher.
Deena looked up and sighed.
-You've gotta be kidding me., whispered the brunette.
-Samantha, go sit down next to the girl with the red flannel. You'll be her lab partner., explained Mr. Slater pointing at Deena.
Sam nodded and bit her inner cheek. She walked up to Deena, her ankle clearly still hurting, her grip around her backpack tightened and her heart beat faster. Deena kept eye contact with her, clearly not happy about that. Sam didn't know what to say so she simply sat down next to Deena and spoke.
-So, what's the experiment of today?, wondered Sam.
-Really? Listen, the only reason I haven't left this room is because I like chemistry. You know, yesterday I was wondering why you were being so bitchy and mean towards me but then I met your mom and it became very clear. Just know that I've dealt with a lot of assholes, bitches and bullies. If you decide to make my life a living hell, I will do the same to you. So if you stay out of my way, I will stay out of yours and we'll have no problems. If you feel like we can't do this assignment like two mature people, then go talk to Mr. Slater to change from partner., replied Deena coldly.
-I'm not my mom., whispered Sam as she looked down and took a look at the assignment that the teacher had given them.
-Then why were you like that with me?, frowned Deena confused.
-Maybe I just don't like you., shrugged Sam.
-Maybe? What the f-, tried the brunette.
-Miss Johnson, I sure hope that you girls are talking about the assignment and not having a private conversation., interrupted the teacher.
-Yes sir. I was explaining to Samantha why we should put water on the sodium to get a reaction from the metal., lied Deena looking up at the teacher.
-Okay, good., nodded Mr. Slater as he walked away, leaving them alone.
Deena clenched her jaw and started doing the experiment while Sam watched and tried to understand.
-I don't get it. Why does that happen when sodium gets in contact with water?, wondered Sam.
-Just write down that a colorless solution is formed, consisting of strongly alkalic sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. This is an exothermic reaction. Sodium metal is heated and may ignite and burn with a characteristic orange flame., replied Deena as the sodium started burning in the water.
-But why does it react that way?, asked the blonde girl.
-Water is a highly polar molecule, meaning that one side of an H2O molecule has a preferentially negative charge, while the opposite side has a preferentially positive charge. It's a significant enough effect that it causes some water molecules, about one in a few million or so, to dissociate into two ions: a single proton and a hydroxyl ion. This has a lot of consequences for things like acids and bases, dissolving salts, activating chemical reactions, etc. But the relevant one here happens when you add sodium. Sodium, this neutral atom with a loosely-held outermost electron, is now in the presence of water. This isn't just the neutral H2O molecules, but the hydroxyl ions and the individual protons. The protons are the most relevant. In pretty much every case, the electron will jump from the sodium atom to the first single proton it finds. That's why the reaction happens so quickly, and gives off so much energy., explained Deena nonchalantly.
-Wow. You really do like chemistry., chuckled Sam.
-No shit., replied the brunette.
Sam kept looking at the sodium in the water, which Deena noticed. The brunette cut a small piece of sodium and moved aside.
-Here, you try. Just be careful., said Deena handing her a knife with the little piece of metal on it.
Sam looked at Deena who simply nodded, so the blonde girl smiled lightly and repeated the same action as Deena had done earlier. Her hand was slightly shaking, which Deena once again noticed. She sighed, got up and placed herself behind Sam. She then put her hand on Sam's, guiding her to the water and letting the piece of sodium fall in the water, immediately pulling away. Sam observed with the reaction with big eyes, it reminding Deena of a child's reaction to a magic trick. Sam's eyes were focused on the reaction until it was over. The blonde girl turned around to see Deena with a small smile. Sam shook her head and moved away from Deena.
-Uh, thanks., said the blonde girl awkwardly.
Deena simply nodded as a "you're welcome", so the blonde girl grabbed the equipment.
-I'll uhm, I'll go clean this., said Sam as she walked away, limping slightly.
Deena sighed. This girl was testing her patience. But she didn't seem dangerous or like a bully. So she just let it slide and ignored it. She started writing the assignment about the experiment on her own, writing her name and Sam's. The bell finally rang, meaning that it was the end of the lesson and the end of Sam's torture.
Haha, sike! Next lesson: math.

In 1994, when they were hiding from Tommy Slater who was making his way through the door with his axe, they were hiding in the chemistry room, which you can see if you look at the background. So yeah, bye!
