Chapter 5

"Mt. Sagiri? If you want to go to Mt. Sagiri, you'll have to cross over that mountain, but... The sun's about to set. Are you really heading there with all that luggage? It's dangerous you know" A woman said while holding her child

"I'll be careful. Thank you very much" Tanjiro said then bow and go on the path the woman directed to.

"People have gone missing lately! Try not to lose your way!" A woman said in louder voice, laced with worry as Tanjiro walk away.

Tanjiro look back at her then wave goodbye at her. Tanjiro continue on walking the path as his surroundings starting to get dark. Soon, the moon is already out and Tanjiro decide to let Nezuko out of the basket. Tanjiro wait for his cousin to transform back but she didn't so he couldn't help but feel worried.

"Neesan? " Tanjiro said while looking at the tied up cloth on his hand

The cloth he held suddenly feel warm but its warmth slowly disappear.

"Maybe Neesan still wants to rest" Tanjiro said at Nezuko.

"Hm"

They continue walking until they reach the stairs with a temple above it.

"There's a temple over there. There's a light leaking through, so someone must be there. Let's check it out" Tanjiro said to Nezuko but stop when a familiar scent reach his nose

"I smell blood! This mountain path is pretty rough! Someone must've gotten hurt!"

Tanjiro and Nezuko hurriedly climb the stairs to reach the temple. Tanjiro immediately slide open the soji door.

"Are you all right?" Tanjiro ask but he gasp when he sees a bloody mess making his basket fall from his back

Many corpses are sprawled on the floor as their blood is all over the walls and a pale man with dark green hair eats the arm of the corpse.

"What the hell? This is my turf. If you break into my territory, I'll make you pay!" The pale man said as he look at them with blood dripping from his mouth while showing his bloodied sharp teeth.

'It's a man eating demon!' Tanjiro thought in shock

Nezuko look at the corpses while her mouth starts to water in hunger. The demon lick off the blood from his fingers while looking at the two of them.

"There's something off about you. Are you both humans? " The demon said as he stand up

Tanjiro took a step back as he look at the demon nervously. They stare for a second before the candle is put off and the demon starts to attack Tanjiro. The demon is about to stab Tanjiro on his neck with his sharp nails but Tanjiro take out his hatchet and slice the demon's neck. Tanjiro land on his back while the demon backflip in the air before he lands.

"A hatchet, huh? Not bad" The demon said as he touch the bleeding injury on his neck "But a scratch like this... Should heal in no time"

The demon's injury stop bleeding as he look at Tanjiro with amusement.

"See that? The bleeding's stopped already"

Tanjiro gasp in shock while Nezuko is struggling not to eat the corpses in front of her. Tanjiro ready his hatchet but the demon push him down by grabbing his neck and stop his other arm that is holding the hatchet.

'He's so fast! And he's unbelievably strong!' Tanjiro thought while he struggle and wince in pain.

"You won't get me twice! All right. I'm gonna snap your neck!" The demon said

While Nezuko is struggling not to give in to her craving in flesh, she suddenly heard her brother in pain making her once innocent eyes turn to slits. She ran fast towards her brother then kick the demon's head making it separate from its body. The head of the demon hit the tree making Tanjiro horrified while looking at it. Then Tanjiro look at the demon's headless body that is still holding his neck. He panic as he look at the exposed bleeding flesh of the demon's neck and push the body off of him. Tanjiro look at Nezuko while she's looking at the body with her brows furrowed.
