Brooklyn Baby - Lana Del Ray
The walk from the taxi to the apartment was a nightmare, although Spencer was starting to sober up he could not walk in a straight line to save his life. I tried to be mad at him but he was just so cute and funny. He just kept walking into bushes and lampposts.
Finally, we stumbled into his apartment and flopped onto his bed. The springs hit our backs and we both groaned out of pain then giggled it off. Spencer passed me a drink. Usually I didn't drink but it seemed right to do now. I took a sip, 'Ugh, oh my god what is that?' I spun the drink around in my hand to try to figure out what my body had just been exposed to.
Spencer chuckled into his pillow. His hair was a mop on the bed. Soon he slowly lifted himself up and stared into my eyes. No words were spoken we just stared at each other for a while. It was kind of weird but at the same time so electric. I took another sip of the drink, it burned my throat.
'You know I used to work in the FBI.'
'Yeah right.' I giggled into my drink.
Spencer's face became more serious, he looked down and started fiddling with the hems of the mattress.
'I actually did. Was the best on my team. Joining at 22 as the youngest, I was gifted. Those people on that team, they were my family.'
It was clear now that this was no joke, 'what happened?'
'I was falsely accused of something I didn't do. I could either plead guilty and go to jail for 5 years or risk life if pleaded innocent.'
'You chose guilty?'
'Yes, and those were the worst 5 years of my life. My mother's last moments happened while I was in that prison.'
'Spence...'
'My team told me they would be there when I got out. But things happen, life goes on and I lost contact with all of them.' He rubbed his eye with his palm and blinked hard as if to stop tears from emerging.
'Come here.' I opened my arms and took Spencer into my embrace. I wasn't sure but he might have cried. After a few moments, he stopped and got up. Still a little groggy, reached for the table and grabbed two cigarettes. He placed one in my mouth and one in his. He then pulled a lighter out of one of his pockets and lit both of ours together.
Spencer chuckled.
'What?'
'You would have liked me back then.' He took a puff, creating a stream of smoke from his mouth.
'I like you now.' I said, balancing the cigarette between two fingers.
'No, I used to be so sweet and innocent, I even wore glasses. I was such a dork.'
I stared at him, he was so hard to figure out. 'Why do you have such a tough exterior now?' I punched his shoulder softly to demonstrate.
He shrugged, 'If you showed weakness in jail they would hurt you. Guess it's a habit now.'
He then lay down on the bed and just stared at the ceiling. I laid down next to him and he lifted his arm and put it around my shoulder before kissing me on the forehead.
I yawned and Spencer's eyes went wide with realization, 'Shit, Y/N it's late you need to go to sleep. I'm sorry for keeping you up.'
'I don't mind, I am not going to work tomorrow.' I laughed at the thought of Daniel's face seeing my desk empty yet again.
'Well, I'm still going to bed, my head in hammering. Goodnight Y/N.' He closed his eyes and I watched him sleep, he looked like a puppy sleeping. So unaware of the world around him.
I combed a loose curl behind his ear and whispered, 'Goodnight Spence.'
