I groan as I slowly walk my way towards the changing room. This has been a long day... Mr. Mohn was really relentless! He didn't even give us time to rest during practice! I can't blame him though... he's really on the edge these days because of the match next weekend.
I dropped my bag at the nearest bench as soon as I arrived in the changing rooms, searched for my towel in the said bag, and headed towards the shower stalls.
I sighed as warm water flowed in my practice-weary body... when I heard someone punching the lockers outside. I turned the water off to check who that person could be. I wrapped the towel around my waist and opened the door.
And the sight that greeted me was my best friend Ohm Thitiwat, the soccer captain, palming his face in frustration.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked and he turned to me surprised.
"Hey. You were showering?" he said in this fake cheery voice.
Really Ohm, we've been best friends for so long – you wouldn't be able to hide anything from me with that fake happy-go-lucky attitude.
I frowned and walked towards him. "Okay, so what did you do now?"
Ohm scowled. "What makes you think I did something wrong?"
"You wouldn't act like that if you didn't." I said simply. "And you shouldn't be destroying school property." My eyes linger on the dented locker.
He sighed deeply and shrugged. "Maybe this time, you're right. It's my fault."
I echoed his sigh and pulled him to sit on the bench. "Okay, tell me. Let's see if I can get you out of whatever mess you're in right now."
"I fucked up. I won't be able to play in the nationals." His deadpanned voice shocked me. All his words were devoid of emotion – it's as if this person wasn't my best friend at all.
"And why is that?" I ask.
"Because I failed my Math and Science classes..." There was disappointment in his voice... and I smiled when I heard traces of it in his sentence. Disappointment is an easy thing to fix – all you have to do is work around it and that disappointment will disappear.
"And your coach banned you from playing?"
Ohm just nodded sadly.
I clamped my right hand on his left shoulder, and said positively, "Then all we have to do is get your grades up before the match." I smiled at him. "I'll help you."
"But the midterms are already finished." He said in a clipped voice. "The grades are already out – we can't do anything to change them." He turned to me with a shocked face. "Wait! Don't tell me you're gonna hack the school's system to change my grade?!" he exclaimed.
I tried to muffle the chuckle that I was tempted to release. "You have a very wild imagination, best friend." I smiled at his confused face. "I know Thailand is quite an advanced country, but our teachers still have the hard copies with them, aside from the soft copy that they submit to our registrar." I explained, and saw him getting depressed again.
"Then how will you help me?" he said in his dejected state.
"Well, for starters, we'll study together – I'll make sure that you get through your classes from now on. Then we'll talk to the professors and see if we can ask for special projects to pull your grades up." I smiled at him. "And I'll talk to Mr. Pete and make him see reason."
He looked at me with a grateful smile planted on his face.
A smile I couldn't help but return.
Suddenly Ohm's smile vanished, he was looking at me intently and somehow, I don't know why, I could see something in his eyes.
Slowly, he was leaning down towards me and I closed my eyes, and finally, our lips met.
None of us move, but when I feel that he is going to pull away, I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him closer whilst moving my lips against his.
I can feel him smiling, and like always, I returned it.
Finally.
