Alone (adjective)
To have nobody else present.
"The employee was working alone that night."
It was Monday, around 3:05 am. Celeste had been startled from his sleep with vivid pictures and aching voices filling his mind.
He was disoriented, lost in his thoughts, like a never ending maze of anguish.
Celeste wanted to isolate himself from the world but still needed somebody to love. The only thing he could do is let his emotions take control.
Crying himself to sleep every single night, it became harder to focus on the bigger picture of life. Hopelessly laying in bed.
Is this what being alone felt like?
Celeste dragged himself out of bed and quietly up the stairs, then out into the backyard. He tumbled down on the grass, lying on his back.
Celeste gazed his eyes towards the stars which sparkled like diamonds in the sky.
The moon glistened on his skin, It was beautiful. Most nights this is where he found himself. It brought him comfort to sit under the countless stars as he gazed out at the endless universe.
Celeste watched as clouds began to fill the sky, and likewise, the voices began to fill the silence. It had started to rain, he had wondered if maybe someone was watching from above.
Celeste cried to himself, tears flowing just as the rain lightly caressed his cheek.
"I'm alone..."
"Right?"
The rain traced down his arms, flowing from his fingertips. He had almost believed that if he thought hard enough, the sadness would flow with it, away from him.
He looked at the dove gray sky with gloom. The tapestry of dark shades was now covered in a heavy quilt of black clouds.
His skin was cold as ice, but he was warm inside.
The backyard became hoarded with butterflies and bees, but when he blinked they were gone. Celeste laid there silently, letting the breeze ruffle his hair.
He imagined the wind passing through his ears and taking the voices and images with it. The images of the butterflies that were just fluttering around. Where have they gone? He was sure he had seen them.
It was a small shower, soon the clouds cleared out to reveal a velvet blue underneath. In the comfort of the sky comes the brightest of stars, lighting up the paths of heaven.
Celeste's eyes moved over each one of those glowing orbs, embedded like jewels in the night sky.
He could sense a feeling of home and comfort..something he doesn't feel very often.
Now somewhere in a different part of town the rain splattered in, bouncing off the balcony railing. Zephyr closed his eyes and felt the water hit his skin. The balcony door slightly opened and in came Zephyr's dog, Zephyr smiled at him "You wanna go outside buddy?"
Zephyr climbed down the stairs and opened the front door to the dripping rain falling from the partly cloudy skies.
He froze for a minute then continued outside, shutting the door as he walked.
He didn't want to get soaked so Zephyr unclipped the leash and let his dog run to do its business.
As Zephyr waited he walked around the steps. Glancing up, his grey eyes met one of the glowing orbs crossing the sky. Soon his glance turned into a gaze.
He saw the lights intertwine with the stars, seconds turned into minutes. Lost in the universe's beauty, the dog's bark begging to go inside became mute, and the sounds of the crickets from the bushes became louder.
He stood there, staring to his heart's content. The rain had finally come to an end and the sky was slowly but surely clearing out, making the cluster of stars scattered throughout, even more prominent.
The front door opened. "Hey sweetie, you okay?" someone said, poking their head out from the doorframe.
Twisting his head, Zephyr moved his eyes to his mother. "Oh, yeah mom.." Zephyr replied in a sleepy voice.
The dog ran inside, shaking off the rain water. "You should get to bed too," said Zephyr's mom as she rubbed his head.
Heading back inside, both of the boys, in two different parts of town, went their separate ways, reaching their rooms, drifting off into a sleep, one with sorrow in his heart and the other with peace.
