Fascination (noun)

The state of looking up to someone or something

"Television has always been a fascination to me."

'If people were wind, Zephyr would be a hurricane and I'd be a blow' is what the blonde-haired boy thought, as he sat back in the hospital bed.

They had performed a surgery on him, his bones felt brittle.

He could still see a glimpse of people around him, just how the doctors were hovering over him earlier but when he stretched out his hands, they all seemed to fade away into the thin air. "Tch." he rolled his eyes.

Zephyr was a lively spirit, labeled as someone he isn't. It bothered Celeste, but a part of him wanted that side of Zephyr for himself.

Possessiveness wasn't his thing however, it wasn't something he could help either.

Celeste felt tired, like someone was tying a knot in his chest and tugging on it. All he could do was sit there, helplessly.

He looked around the room finding nothing of interest, an empty marshmallow wrapper, a jug of water, a phone charger, the stuffed elephant and a few pillows.

There was so much he wanted to do, so many places he wanted to visit but lord forbid, all he could do now was occasionally gaze out the window from his bed.

Helena wasn't working her shift that day, there was a substitute nurse who bought him food and reminded him to take his meds.

Celeste had grown quite close with Helena. She was kind and independent, somewhat like an older sister he never had.

Celeste reached out, grabbing the Elephant and hugging it tight. He looked at the tac that read "C+Z" before his head went blank and tears started rolling down his eyes.

It had been around a month and a half since he last cried. It felt awful, but relieved at the very same time. He cried to his heart content.

If only his parents were here he would've treated him way earlier and none of this would've happened.

He felt burdened, he wanted all this to end.

The clock ticked slowly. The lights were dimmed and the curtains were now drawn.  Celeste didn't feel sleepy at all, but he still had his eyes shut.

He tried not to pay attention to anything at all but his repose was broken when the door gently creaked open. "Are you asleep?" The voice of a woman spoke.

"No- why?" Celeste questioned.

"I found this in your drawer at home and thought you'd want it."

Celeste sat up to see his mother holding up a binded copy, he used to write a lot in it before, nothing to be kept a secret but something he preferred not to be read.

What surprised him the most is how the last time he had seen his mother was about a week ago, and now she suddenly showed up in front of the door with a diary.

She came and sat down beside the frail boy, handing the copy to him, Celeste fiddled through the pages hoping she hadn't read anything, he kept aside a blue fountain pen tucked into one of the pages. It was filled with doodles of things he couldn't explain.

He opened a page with a cat wearing a crown, scribbled over a skyscraper. He flipped a page or  two and stopped to look at a picture of building blocks floating in a river painted in pink. Most of the pages he flipped through had drawings of stars and space.

The rest were written over with black ink.

His mother didn't speak for a few minutes before breaking the silence "I hope you don't mind me reading."

Celeste raised an eyebrow "So- you've already read through it?"

She nodded. "I've never gotten time to really know you, so it was all quite new to me."

Celeste smiled

"It's messed up." his mother scratched her head

"It isn't...really."

Celeste didn't want comfort, he wanted freedom, but for now this would do.

"I've noticed-" his mother said "you're into stars and stuff."

Celeste nodded "It's always been that way."

She looked confused, "Why, what's so interesting about them?" She asked, quite genuinely.

Celeste shut the diary close, smiling. He was looking downwards and didn't take his eyes off as he spoke, his tone was obviously filled with fascination,

"I've always adored the way the sky loves the stars, through the darkness, for eternity."
