Daydreams (noun)

A series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

"She was lost in a daydream."

As the sun rose over the horizon the school gates opened, crowds of children walked inside. Among them stood Celeste.

Celeste had caught a cold, he had lost himself in the rain last night, with a mind that was awake, yet asleep. There were bags under his eyes. It was a mild cold with nothing much to worry about.

The grass was covered in rain water, splashing in every direction as people walked over it, dew dripped down from the wet leaves. The sidewalk was covered in muddy puddles and people were stepping on them too, well the people who didn't care about getting dirty.

That wasn't the case with Celeste though, no one was home, and he knew he'd have to wash his clothes himself, and like any other teenager he did not enjoy doing that.

Out of breath, the blond boy reached the classroom. It was almost empty, only a few kids had arrived. The wooden desks were neatly placed, one after another.

Celeste sat down on his assigned seat, placing his bag down. His head was pounding from the fever but he didn't let it bother him much.

As time went by, one by one people started to arrive, filling up the empty chairs. The weather was nice, the soft wind shook the leaves making the trees bow down.

The air was fresh, almost sweet and floral, the pace of everyday life seemed to have relaxed to a steadier rhythm.

Soon the raven haired boy made his way into the class, his bag trailing behind as he walked. Celeste tried to be polite and waved at him "Good morning." Zephyr kept his bag down

"Morning." he muttered.

Soon class began, and everyone was busy with their work. The teacher walked in looking inspired and enthusiastic, already Celeste feels a daydream starting, a really good one.

This teacher's gonna have to be really interesting if she wants to compete. Daydreams fly in as if they played upon feathered wings. The daydream was a heady potion of chance and excitement, a personal movie with himself as the main character.

Class was over, there was a wave of chattering and laughing which jolted Celeste back to reality. He saw Zephyr playing with his pencil as he stared at his blank notebook.

He was about to keep his stationary back in his bag when Zephyr said "What's up with you?" Celeste turned around a confused, yet scared expression on his face.

"Don't act like you've seen a ghost. Why do you act like that? You keep zoning out, reaching for the air almost." He added.

Celeste felt his chest rise and fall as he took deep breaths. "I don't know...my therapist used to tell me I have something called schizophrenia."

Zephyr put his pencil down, "Skiso- what?"

Celeste looked at him, "Schizophrenia-"

Zephyr clicked his tongue, "Oh."

'Schizophrenia' the phone in Zephyr's hand lit up. He scanned through the words as he tapped his feet to an unknown beat.
'A disorder that affects a person's ability to think, feel and behave clearly.
The exact cause of schizophrenia isn't known, but a combination of genetics, environment and altered brain chemistry and structure may play a role.'

He scrolled down a bit until a paragraph caught his attention

'Schizophrenia is characterised by thoughts or experiences that seem out of touch with reality, disorganised speech or behaviour and decreased participation in daily activities. Difficulty with concentration and memory may also be present.'

He felt an ache in his chest, The sigh that escaped Zephyr's lips was slow, as if his brain needed that time to process the information. His eyes remained fixed on the phone.

Symptoms:
Disorganized speech
Hallucinations
Social anxiety
Paranoia

"No wonder." Zephyr muttered.
