"Ms. Anna?" I woke up and a nurse stood next to me.
I sat and looked around, dad was asleep and his hat was sliding off his head.
"Yeah?"
"Will you come with me please?" I nodded glumly and followed her down the dark hallways of the hospital, until we stopped at an office.
The door marked in gold letters 'Dr.Harley,' I go inside.
"Hi Anna, Matthew was fine but, I'm very sorry to inform you..." Dr. Harley took a breath, "Matthew only has 6 months to live."
That sentence hit me like a truck. How was I supposed to respond to this? The love of my life will not be with me for the rest of my life. My heart skipped a beat and I couldn't breathe.
"Is- is there anything that we can do?" I choked up.
"There's only one thing to do, you need to love him... You need to love him like everyday is last day, take pictures with him remind him how much you love him, pray for him, take him on adventures with you, you everything that you want to do before you kick the bucket... Just embrace the last days you have with him."
I nodded. "What did happen to him this evening?"
"His organs temporarily shut down, we were able to get them back starting again, but that was an awful close one."
"Thank you so much, I don't know what I would do without you. It's just..."
"It will be okay hun, I'll see you next weekend at family brunch." She hugged me and kissed my cheek and I found Dad in the lobby and I were on our way.
I sat in silence on the car ride home. I felt guilty, because of what I've been putting dad through. My life is great, I'm somewhat attractive, I have a home, and food on my table, yet my boyfriend is slipping out of my grasp. I walk inside and go to bed, maybe I'll get some sleep tonight.
the next day
"Morning sunshine!" My dad hobbles in and wakes me up.
"Hi dad." I half-heartily smile
"I thought I should wake you up early so we could enjoy breakfast at Harlee's !" Dad gleamed.
I could tell that that pleased him, so I went along with it. I nodded and got dressed. I actually cared what I looked like for the first time, so I put my hair in a bun and put my makeup on.
"Ready?" My dad smiled and held out his hand. I nodded and grabbed it and walked out to the car with him.
"Where are we headed to?" I asked.
"I guess you'll have to stick around and find out." Dad chuckled then turned down a street, to where my favorite bakery was. I glanced around and my face gleamed. I've been spending all my time helping Mat and I've forgotten that today is my-
"Happy birthday Anna!" The crowd of my family and friends yelled. I glanced around and saw my family, Kendra, and tons of other people from my school. I chatted for hours, to people I thank them for coming.
I just can't believe I forgot my own birthday, I was just about to sit down when I saw Mathew in the corner.
"Matt?" I walk over and smile.
"You know what sucks?" Mathew whispered.
"Yeah?" I put mt hand on his leg and sit.
"My mind is recalling something. .. A few years ago uh- your party. I remember helping your dad plan it. And the shitty part is, I remember this memory, and I'm dying."
I felt so much pain and joy in his statement.
