There was a light fog over the tarmac. The First Order had been getting closer to our planet so we did all we could to ensure our safety. All vehicles were stored in the outskirts of the woods with fake vines laying on top of them. It seemed to be I was the only person up, and I had Dianna with me. She was half asleep on my back as I did a small workout, pushups with her like a weight. Put her on my shoulders and did some squats as well as had her cling to my legs as I did pullups.
It was about six in the morning, and we made our way over to the mess hall. I slapped some toast and eggs onto my plate and Dianna got a bagel. We sat together in silence before she said something that surprised me. "I miss my mommy." She whispered. My heart swelled and I wrapped her in a hug. "What if we went to visit mommy?" I whispered back. "Show her your training?" She nodded and hugged her stuffed animal close. The thing was a wreck. The eyeballs were sewn back on by Finn, and Snap had placed a bandaid over a slit on the arm.
Dianna refused to let us get her a new one, even this one you could barely tell that the bear was originally brown, it had a black, almost grey color with dirt and anything else on it. Brining Diana back would be risky, but I would have to do it alone and on a scooter. I freshened up, throwing on a jacket made out of thin fabric, with no sleeves and just holes for the arms. It was brown and had a hood. It was almost a cloak but more functional.
Dark jeans and a white tank top while my hair ran down my back in two french braids. Dianna wanted to wear a cloak that almost resembled mine and black leggings and a t-shirt. We scooted off into the woods, the damp morning air resting heavily on our chest, and morning dew getting stuck on our eyelashes. The soft hum of the motor was calming, and it eventually put Dianna to sleep.
Her breaths were shallow and calm, while mine was short and frantic. There was no need to deny that I was terrified. There was something off in the force, it was thicker than usual. Muggy, almost. It was like trying to swim in mud. Unclear and hard to move my thoughts. We almost got to the end of the forest when I stopped the speeder, parking it in a dense, green brush. The forest floor was soft and full of dirt. No plants grew due to the lack of sunlight the trees canopy provided.
We walked. well...I walked, and Dianna sat on my shoulders. Her arms hung around my neck lazily, and her chin rested atop my head. The good thing about this forest is there was plenty of hiding spots, in trees and behind rocks. The ground was soft so footsteps wouldn't be heard, but not soft enough so the footprints couldn't be traced. It was still early morning so fireflies flew around us, creating a mystical glow.
For a minute I let my guard down as I got distracted by a little pond. We made a pit-stop and sat atop the large rock to watch the sun start to poke through the trees. Dianna giggled as fireflies landed on her arms and nose, lighting up her golden eyes with wonder. This was the first time I felt carefree. For a minute I let my guard down, and that's when I felt it. Movement coming towards us. We weren't the only ones here.
No, I'm not talking about animals...another being. Slowly I unhitched my blaster from my belt and pulled Dianna down. "Don't move, until I whistle like this." I softly hummed a tune and she nodded, anxiety seeping from her bones to mine. Stepping in front of the rock I raised the gun. "Who's out there!" No answer. Letting the force guide the steps I trusted in my ancestors, my body made its way to whoever was following us.
"Nat?" I heard a hiss to my left. Spinning around I cocked the blaster into place. The barrel pointed at the terrified face of Poe Dameron. "God Damn it, Poe!" I hissed right back at him, venom laced in my words. My whistle was loud and clear for Dianna who emerged from behind the rock. She came up to me, hugging my leg. "You scared us, Poe." I sighed, rubbing my face with both hands.
His pair of hands wrapped around my wrists, bringing them down and planting a small kiss on my forehead. "What are you doing out here?" He asked. I explained to him that Dianna missed her mom, and I was going to take her to see her secretly. He nodded and asked to join us to which I agreed. We walked with each other until the huts came into view.
