Homecoming

Softball season is going well, but it only has about a month left before we play for districts. During that time, if we lose a game, we will be eliminated. This also means that marching band season is coming to a close with football season only having weeks left to play in the regular schedule. However, this week's game is Homecoming, so there will be a school dance the day after the game.

I hate school dances.

I don't like dancing, because I can't and make a fool out of myself if I try. I don't like getting dressed up, because I would much rather wear my jeans and t-shirt. Lastly, I don't like Hoco-date proposals, because it will never happen to me. So, I have skirted past having to go to the Homecoming Dance for three years now. Unfortunately, my friends say that I need to go to my Senior Homecoming Dance for the experience. So, guess what? I am walking around in the mail to try and find a dress to wear to this stupid thing.

"Harper, you have to try something on. We have been here for hours and we have picked out all of our dresses, so it is time for you to pick yours out!" Sophie yells from across the store we are currently shopping in.

"Ugh, fine." I grab the closest dress I could find that looks not atrocious and head to the dressing room. I try on the dress and it looks fine. I'm not really trying to impress anybody, so long as it is a dress that I feel comfortable in. I step outside the dressing room where all my friends are waiting to see the dress.

"Aw, look at Harper in a dress! I thought I would never see the day!" Dylan says as she wipes a fake tear away from her eye. I give her the finger.

"It looks alright, but I think we can do better" Sophie says with a her hand on her chin and looking at me. Emma comes around the corner with Jamie, holding two more dresses in hand.

"We know you wouldn't really look at the dresses, so we went shopping for you. Try these" Emma says as Jamie handed me the dresses she was holding. I roll my eyes and head back into the changing room. I guess my friends will be picking my dress for me.

Well, the end of the week is here and it is the day of the homecoming football game. All of my friends have managed to get asked to the dance besides me. Dylan is going with Blake of course, Sophie was asked by a senior on the football team, Emma was asked by a shy senior that she plays tennis with, and Jamie was asked by a senior on the soccer team.

What the heck am I supposed to do now? I was planning on going with the girls and now I don't want to disrupt their dates, even though they tell me that I wouldn't be a disruption. Honestly, I will probably just try to find a table and sit down and watch all my friends have fun, because I like to see them happy.

The school day flies by and so does the parade. Softball practice was cancelled today because of the school's activities this weekend. Dylan and I are currently in my room before we have to report to the band room for the football game tonight.

"You sure you are going to be okay tomorrow night? I can ask Blake if Ben is available." Dylan asks while we watch another episode of Glee.

"No, don't drag Ben into this, I'll be fine. I just want to make sure you guys have fun."

"If you say so. I just feel bad. I talked you into going to this thing and I don't want to leave you alone." Dylan said and gave me a sad look.

"Enjoy you're last Homecoming Dance, Dylan! I will be just fine. I'll find somebody to talk to. It will be okay!" I tried to reassure my best friend. Dylan gave me an uncertain look and let the topic go.

After a while, my dad came downstairs and told us that dinner was on the table. We went upstairs to eat and soon were headed out the door towards school.
