"Morning Pancake." I said, a yawn escaping my lips. A short male just glared at me, his black hair looking as if it was soaking in the scorching sun. "Nothing like being late," He grumbled. I just sheepishly laughed as soldiers and new recruits ran in front of us around a dirt track. A tension in the air fell around us two as I monitored our newer soldiers and Levi kept track of the older.
"Where's Erwin?" His monotone voice broke the noisy silence of heavy breathing."Last time I knew he was in his office." He just hummed in response. The soldiers finished up their run and gathered around us. "Alright, brats, we are going to do some odm training. And make sure you listen to your higher ups if they have advice." Levi seemed to nod towards me so I could take center stage. I looked around at mostly flushed and sweating scouts. Seeing them all so intently listening instead of half ass paying attention was refreshing. As when we actually are put in danger, they throw all sense of actual listening out.
"Ok soldiers, when time gets real rough this baby is going to get you into or out of danger." I knocked on my own odm gear and let the clanking of the metal ring out. "She is going to be your best friend in life or death situations. I know you all know how to use it but not in the way that could save you. So here is what I want you to do. We are going to have a race." Their faces lit up or grew with worry as I continued. "But here is the catch, this race will start out here on flat land, go through the woods" I pointed towards the path they were going to take "and end in flat land, this should teach you to not only conserve gas, but what positions can carry your momentum farther." They all nodded and got ready to start.
"On my mark" I scream
"Get set"
"GO"
A could of dust and gas follow behind all the soldiers. Levi looked over at me
"Didn't think you would pass up a race." He says arms crossed.
"Who said I did? Just 2 more seconds" I responded looking at an invisible watch. I readied my gear a took off flashing a smile at Levi. As I turned back I noticed a messy Commander come out of the building. But by then I had gotten to the trees. Weaving, flipping, and flying my way through. Shortly I had caught up with the back of the soldiers. I hooked onto another tree and let a little gas out having me fly pass them and pushing me foward. "Gotta go faster" I scream flying by. I eventually catch up to the front after passing most of the soldiers. They were either pushing to hard, taking it too easy, or hung up and confused on how to go faster. We almost came out of the woods and into the clearing, I hooked into a tree and used it almost as a swing waiting until the hook unhooked itself to release some gas and finally push in front and out in the clearing. I had crossed the finish with the soldiers ways behind me. Jumping up and down smiling and celebrating until I saw Levi just shaking his head.
It had been about a month and things started to get tense. Erwin had told us the plan and continued to adjust it based on his gut feeling and gambles. I started to grow stressed knowing I was in the back. If something or someone who killed sawney and bean were to come to get Eren I would be screwed. If that was Erwin's plan to get me killed I would live out of spite. Tommorow would be the day and well I wasnt sure I was ready.
"Erwin, can we talk?" I tug on his jacket sleeve as his body turned toward me. "Yea, I was on my way to get some tea if you want to join and then we can talk in my office?" I nodded silently and walked behind him until he took his hand and put it in between my shoulder blades to push me next to him. "Don't walk behind me, your are not that low in the survey corps." He smiled with his eyes at me. His hand still rested on my back as a younger soldier passed by us. Giving a glance with a stack of papers in their hand. We had arrived in the kitchen and Erwin offered me a cup of tea. I nodded as he pulled a cup out of a cubbord. "Milk or sugar?" "A bit of sugar please." He nodded and poured the tea in the glass, the steam dissapearing before it hit his chisled cheekbones. Sugar was added ever so carefully, as if he was a baker perfecting his decorating. He grabbed the cup and started to head out of the kitchen. "Hey are you going to hand me my tea?" I say chasing after him.
"A gentleman should always hold a ladies tea so she doesnt spill it." I huffed and went up next to him as we arrived to his office and opened the door. He placed my tea on the desk and I took a seat in the chair I had fallen asleep in a month earlier. I started to fidget as a question got caught in my throat. My hands started to slip from sweat as I picked up my cup to sip my tea. The heat radiates to my lips as I was going to take a sip. The steam rolled up my nostrils. Almost somehow adding pressure that I may never expierience the taste of tea or the smell. Finally I took a deep breath.
"Erwin are you trying to kill me by putting me in the back?" His eyes widened and his face flushed as the sentenced finished.
