Jacob

Jacob leaned back into the couch. His dad wasn't back from school yet, and it was Evelyn's turn to make lunch. The smell of pork roast nearly distracted him from his question.

"Hey Ev?"

"Mmhhmm." She turned down the heat of the stove. "What?"

"How are the new kids doing?" Jacob had a feeling that they would have another job soon. He'd sensed it that night in the woods. Whenever someone- or something- new came along, they usually came to him and his sister.

"They're fine. It doesn't seem like they've noticed anything strange."

"Did you pick up anything from them?" Jacob asked, knowing it was futile.

Evelyn snorted. "No, that's your thing. We're friends, though- I could invite them over if that helps."

Jacob's response was wary. If one of them really was psychic, she would pick up the disturbance of their mom's spirit and the stupid body buried in the front yard. He knew they should've put Andrew's body somewhere else. "If you want. But you know I can't help them until they actually realize what's happening. What'd Wilder say about the book?"

"He screwed up. Said 'boss baby' should've picked someone else for the job," she said, making air quotes around the nickname.

"Tell him to fuck himself, I hate that name. I'll have to talk to him later about that."

She laughed. "Alright, roast's out of the oven. Go wash your hands."

"What are you, Snow White?" But he listened anyways.

"If it's the ghost of Roxanne we have to deal with now, I'd rather just quit," Jacob complained later, digging in.

"What, you handle a psycho killer and you're afraid of some teenage spirit?" Evelyn asked derisively.

Jacob rolled his eyes. "I'll have you know that teenage spirits are terrifying, Evelyn, especially girls."

She nodded thoughtfully. "True. Remember Leo's ex girlfriend? Eesh, she was creepy."

"He has you now. You're even creepier," Jacob teased. It was his greatest joy in life these days, since Evelyn had broken out of the river in Egypt and scored Leo.

Evelyn's mouth snapped shut. If looks could kill, he would have been incinerated by now.

After lunch, Jacob had absolutely nothing to do. Sometimes he lured people over to their yard with his psychic pull, but that was kind of evil. Maybe he could drag Leo... but no, Leo had almost defeated the pull. With no supernatural abilities of his own, he was surprisingly resistant to them. He was way stronger than anyone gave him credit for.

What if he brought over the new kids? No, that wouldn't work. He was younger than them and it'd be really odd. So what could he do? It had been ages since the last haunting... haunting. That's it! Jacob ran to his computer and opened the website Evelyn had made for their ghost hunting service.

One new message.

YES! FINALLY!  he thought.

It was from a girl with the user k_CHOPra. Aha. Found her. The message read: I found you guys before I moved to town and thought this website was just a prank, but I'm not so sure anymore. I've been experiencing some really weird things, I hope you can help me. Also, you have the same last name as my friend; are you related to her? Thanks.

Jacob typed back, yes. this is evelyn's brother and we run this website. whats ur issue?

Almost instantly, three dots appeared.
