"What the actual fuck?" exclaimed James. "Why would she try to kill him?"
"We've put out an APB on her," said Nick. "Did he say anything to you?"
"Just the word run," replied James. "I wasn't going to leave him there. Gail secured the apartment and called for an emergency portal while I did CPR."
"Are you fit enough to come off medical leave?" asked Nick.
"Yeah, the boss," he motioned to me, "locked me out for 10 days, but we settled a day early. I felt no pain."
"Get Bruce to confirm and I'll make you lead agent on this," said Nick. "Now go get your accreditation before the security chief gives me shit for overriding his protocols."
We both stood up to leave.
"Remember we're dealing with the CIA, Buck," warned Nick. "You might want to talk with Everett Ross to find out who will talk to you."
James nodded and we went to the MPs station. They went by the book in assigning us our accreditation and accommodation. Once we had our lanyards they broke protocol slightly by saying how happy they were to see him up and running again. He smiled at them then told them to follow the damn protocols to the letter. They just kept smiling at him. Just before we were out of earshot I heard one of them say, "pass the word, the Sarge is in the house."
We dropped our bags and dogs off at our room, surprisingly the same one we were in before. Then there was a stop in the security office. Dixon came up and offered his hand.
"Brad, how did the wedding go?" asked James.
"Great Sarge," he replied. "She really is the girl for me. She got a job at the commissary so we'll see each other more. And you? I heard you brought Oeznik in."
"Yeah, we're headed up to medical to see how he is and to assess my fitness," said James. "I'm lead agent on the investigation. Care to get off sentry duty for a while?"
"Tell me when and where, Sarge," Dixon replied. "I have someone in mind to replace me. It'll be an opportunity for her. Ramirez. She's shown promise."
"I'll talk to her first but I trust your judgement," said James. "Brad, we're going into the lion's den."
"CIA?" said Dixon. "Geez Sarge, talk about hostile territory."
"That's why I want my best guy with me," said James, smiling.
"By the way, Sarge, I just got the final report on the disposal of the munitions and bio weapons on the drones that attacked your home," said Dixon. "Over half of the bio weapons were inert and about the same number of the armed drones had blanks instead of real ammunition. Strange, don't you think?"
"That is strange," said James. "Forward that to Cap and Fury. Mark it Eyes Only. I'll read you in on it soon but for now it's need to know."
"You got it," said Dixon, unquestioningly.
They shook hands and just like that James had the first member of his team. Up in the medical centre Bruce was in his office and waved us in.
"You saved his life, Buck," he said. "Bullet nicked an artery but you kept his heart going long enough to get him here. He's a tough old bird but he would have bled out. I'm guessing you'll want a fitness assessment right away. Step into a cubicle, strip down to your boxers and I'll be in in a couple of minutes."
"Why don't you go see Oeznik?" asked James. "I'll be there shortly."
I found Oeznik in a room marked CCU. Lauren was his nurse. Unlike the last time there was no guard.
