Chapter 9: Unexpected Company

A few days have passed since Ash caught Tepig. After exploring and doing some preparations, the two decided to split ways. Hilda thought that she shouldn't rely on Ash too much and needed to travel by herself in order to improve.

By the time they left, it was already after lunch. So it was unlikely they will reach Striaton City by today. Route 2 similar to Route 1, was just a forest, only much larger.

"Phew! It is hot today." Ash said while taking off his hat and using it as a fan.

"Pi, pika." Pikachu was also sweating and panting. Ash thought that it would be a good idea to use Froakie to cool himself, but knowing his Pikachu, he quickly discarded that idea. Instead, he decided to set a camp nearby.

"Alright everyone come on out!" Ash then sent out all of his current Pokemon, which includes Rufflet, Froakie, and Tepig.

"Could you guys find us a nice spot for camping?" The Pokemon all nodded and went to find a suitable place. Ash followed his Pokemon looking around and found a nice clearing behind the bushes.

"Alright, now that we have our camping location, Tepig and Froakie, clear this area for me. Rufflet and Pikachu will look for branches and sticks for fire while I will set up the camp. How does that sound?" The Pokemon all cried out in agreement and got straight to their work.

Thanks to their efforts, Ash was able to finish setting up the camp by dinner.

"Good work everyone! Now it's time I make dinner." Ash then turned to Pikachu.

"Alright Pikachu, let's go look for some berries. Rufflet, could you help us as well?" Rufflet and Pikachu both landed on each of his shoulders, signaling that they are okay with helping.

Ash gave his Pokemon a grateful look before going to search for the berries. He told Tepig and Froakie to protect the Camp-sight so it wouldn't be destroyed.

"I wonder if this forest has any Pecha Berries." Ash spoke to himself, "Oran berries should work too. They are good for troublesome situations."

The trio continued looking for berries even as the sky kept getting darker.

"Ruff Rufflet!" Rufflet was calling Ash, meaning he found some berries. Ash and Pikachu both followed Rufflet and saw various berry trees. "Wow! Pecha Berries, Oran Berries, AND Rawst Berries?! This is just what we needed! Good job Rufflet!" Ash pet Rufflet's head as he landed on Ash's arm.

Ash then started to put berries back into the bag. After collecting enough, the trio returned back to their camp, where Ash started to make some food for himself and his Pokemon.

Ash was so glad that he asked Brock for some tips. Even though the food wasn't as good as Brock's, it was still pretty delicious. The Pokemon seemed to enjoy it as well, considering they were gulping them down. It seemed that Ash wasn't the only one that was hungry. As Ash continued to eat, he turned to Rufflet, "I just realized, you haven't had a single battle since you were caught right?" Rufflet looked towards Ash while happily eating his meal. I'll make sure to use you in my next battle how does that sound?" Rufflet made a happy squeak while continuing to eat. Whether it was because of the food or the good news, it didn't matter to Ash, as long as his Pokemon was happy.
