Sophie opened her eyes to find herself in a room of pitch black. She could feel the shadows begging her to use them. She blinked and the room exploded with light. When she looked down at herself she found herself shredded with shadows. Sophie thought of someone who could help. Tam. He could help. He's a shade. Sophie reached for her imparter after cursing at the voice and said "Show me Tam Song."
"Hello? Sophie?" He asked, rubbing his eyes.
"Umm. I need your help?" She admitted though it was more like a question.
Tam blinked "What in Exile can you need my help with?" he wondered. "Especially at 3 in the morning"
"This" she said pointing to her palm, though it was more like her arm with no hand.
"You manifested as a vanisher.?" he guessed.
"Nope," Sophie said, but the room blinked again, answering the question.
"YOU MANIFESTED AS A SHADE?" Tam yelled.
"I think" Sophie cringed.
"I'm coming over to help you control it," Tam announced, cutting off the call .
"Could the voice have triggered it?" Sophie wondered out aloud.
"Yes" The voice said in her head. "I am afraid though, that you must keep it a secret" it announced and Sophie felt it's presence leave her mind. Sophie walked to her closet and changed into a simple tunic and pants. She was out and was startled to see Tam, with his arm crossed, looking serious.
"So you manifested" he said slowly, "as a shade" Sophie nodded.
Sophie still didn't understand how a criminal can answer her questions, especially if she's with the neverseen, without trying to kill her and all. But she was desperate for answers, so she'd find her alright.
After a moment of silence he clapped his hands, well let's get started then!" he exclaimed.
Sophie gave him a perplexed expression. "Use your powers," he said.
After about two hours of Tam instructing Sophie what to do, she was able to resist the pull of the shadows and control the 'blinking' (for shades) as Tam called it.'
At the end of the training Tam was looking at her strangely.
"What?" she asked.
"Its just that usually Shades beg the shadows to obey them, but with you the shadows are begging YOU to command them" he said
Sophie chuckled nervously, she was having another talk with the voice , " Must be another umm.. hazard of being the moonlark" she said. Tam raised an eyebrow but nodded.
"When are you going to tell everyone?" Tam asked.
"I am not going to tell them" Sophie said, remembering how the voice told her to keep it a secret. "Not right now at least" she mumbled.
Tam stared at her, "Sophie, you can't go around keeping things from every-" Tam argued but got cut off.
"I told you, didn't I? I didn't go around trying to figure it out myself!" Sophie reasoned
"You need a mentor, Sophie," Tam tried. Sophie cursed the voice in her head for not giving a suitable excuse.
"I already have one," she said, looking at him. "Please Tam, I don't want to walk around with one more ability. I already am a freak!" Sophie tried.
"Okay" Tam said simply. "But you won't keep it a secret forever, right?"
"Right," Sophie said.
After Tam left Sophie showered, changed into her uniform, took a few tips from Vertina and headed off to school.
