As a result of creators having an often dubious sense of humor, negative AU's are something that exist in abundance in the multiverse. Nightmare for this reason spent a considerable amount of time looking for candidates that fit the right profile to join his side, but simply belonging to a world with the theme being darker than the rest was not enough.

Power, being able to participate in battles even when outnumbered many times against unknown opponents was necessary, as well as not being a coward who would desert in the first situation where his life was at risk, an overwhelming force capable of killing the inhabitants of an entire AU was fundamental. Malice and evil, being someone who would complete missions to the King of Nightmares, death and suffering would be daily occurrences, having the cold blood to perform such tasks would also be essential. Last and perhaps most importantly, Nightmare prefers to go after those who are lost in the pit of despair and have lost their way, being lost souls without direction, it was up to Nightmare to give them a new purpose, besides the fact of course that broken monsters who have nothing left to lose are easier to manipulate.

Several possible candidates were considered and discarded frequently, until one of Undertale's worst genocidal timelines stood out. A Sans so miserable that he allied himself with his worst enemy only to ease his pain by inflicting it on others, but who was resourceful enough to steal the human's power and then continue fighting for what would be eternity if not for Nightmare's direct interference.

With his interest piqued, the King of Nightmares set up a test for his potential recruit. By killing his family and friends, this Sans showed he had what it takes to carry his King's will to spread negativity throughout the multiverse, but he only battled in a standard AU without much challenge, his battle skills need to be proven somewhere more dangerous, so after preparations for the challenge were made, Nightmare began it with high expectations.

First Snowdin, then Waterfall, followed by Hotland, CORE and then the royal palace. Throughout the journey, this Sans encountered the unknown and faced much stronger versions of the monsters he knew, but still he triumphed. Even in complicated and difficult situations, he laughed in the face of danger and faced it head on, coming out not only victorious but also stronger and stronger whenever his LOVE increased. At the moment he was in the judging room looking for a new opponent.

- At least the golden color of this place could be different, if there are more worlds similar to mine then I hope at least that will change. - As he continued to despise the color gold, his steps were interrupted when Nightmare reappeared in front of him.

- Don't worry about it, there are so many ridiculous variations scattered throughout the multiverse that it would be impossible for all the rooms to be the same. But more importantly, congratulations on surviving all the way here, luckily it was not a waste of time. It seems that even an ignorant commoner like you has its uses. - Due to his extremely proud nature, Nightmare could make even the simplest of compliments sound like an insult.

- Okay... would you mind explaining what this is all about? - Being subjected to so many dangers one after the other, Sans was on alert and kept an eye out for any suspicious movements as he made a firm grip on his knife, ready to strike at any time if necessary.

- I have told you before, I am looking to form a group and you are the most qualified so far. You have proven your strength by making your way here and that makes you a valuable soldier, now you are just missing the last part of your test. - His monologue was cut in half when Sans decided to hit him with several questions.

- First of all, what exactly do you want a group for? And why me of all people? What is this place and how did I get here? And also... - His voice was interrupted when the tip of a tentacle went straight to his throat.
