That Night II

"I would like to introduce you to your new captain..." Andy looked up. Her gaze ran from the chief, around the room, and then back to the man stood ahead of her. His eyes glided across the row of firefighters stood lined up in front of him. Their stares caught. Together, they were transported back to that night, when their eyes locked for the first time. That surge of energy the felt, how they felt cured from everything for just a simple second before plunging back to reality. That's what they felt again. Her world faded around her and the chief's next words would tell her the one thing she longed to know ever since they first met.
"Captain Robert Sullivan!" He continued. Andy snapped out of her daydream and had to step backwards to steady herself. Suddenly, she felt sick again. Really sick this time.
"Herrera, you okay?"
She heard Miller's muffled voice in the background. Feeling to weak to answer, she just stood there. A few others decided to follow him up with questions and answers like, "She looks like she's about to throw up!" or, "Andy, talk to me," or even, "Don't you think you should go home?"
'Breathe,' She thought, 'its easy, in and then out, in and then out.'
As she tilted her head up to look at a line of worried faces, she realised she hadn't heard a word anyone had said.
"I'm fine," She said, "just didn't sleep too great last night. That's all."
"Andy." Maya replied with just her name.
"No, I'm fine, I was just having a moment, don't worry," She knew she was messing up her chance at a good first impression, and she knew you only get one of them.
"Chief, can I just uhh," she pointed her thumb backwards over her shoulder, signalling she needed to leave. "Can I just take a minute, I'll be back in no time,
sorry."
"Don't apologise Herrera, I can see you need it. Go ahead." The chief's eyes were warm with empathy as he spoke. She gave him a warm, weak smile in return as she left the barn.

I yanked the door open with force as I walked out of the barn- I didn't want to look any more brittle right now. I knew that as soon as lineup was over I would have at least Vic and Maya looking for me around the station. Needing to be alone, I had to think about where they wouldn't look for me. My bunk - too obvious. The lockers - not hidden. The showers - a cliche. Really, I had either the beanery, or the roof. I contemplated going to the roof, but decided Maya knows me too well, so walked into the beanery. Having not eaten since the previous day, I was hungry, but my stomach churned at the thought of swallowing anything right now. My eyes darted around the room subsequently, trying to be wary of anyone entering the room with me. Thinking I should eat, however much I didn't want to, I grabbed a box of cereal from the cabinet and sat down at the far end of the table to eat. I felt like my organs flipped as I forced it down my throat. Just then, the door swung open as I knew it inevitably would. I was just glad it was Vic that walked in and not anybody else.
"Andy," she spoke softly, "what's going on? Talk to me." Vic's eyes were inviting me in but I still held myself back from telling her. The truth is even I didn't know why I felt like this, I brushed it off as just a cold. It'd pass eventually.
"Vic I'm fine." I struggled to speak. Suddenly I felt like I had been punched in the gut and I got up, throwing my head into the sink. I hated being sick.
"I guess eating's not an option," I chuckled trying to make her feel better about me, but she just walked to the tap to get me a glass of water.
"Here," she said.
I threw a questioning glance in her direction.
"Andy you're sick. You need to go home," She was telling the truth, but I wouldn't admit it. I had to stay, I couldn't go home. Not to Ryan. Not today. Taking a sip of the water, I swilled it around my mouth and spat it into the sink.
"Vic," I said persuasively. "Go to the lounge, the team is all in there. I'll be in there in 2 minutes."
"No. I'll stay with you," she persisted.
"Vic GO. You can even count if you want." I was praying for her to leave. I just needed a little break, just a couple minutes to think over everything.
"You can count on it!" She yelled as she pushed the door open. Within seconds, she was gone and I was alone with my demons once again.

As I walked towards the beanery, I could hear someone inside, so I tried to be quiet so I could see who it was. Pushing the door ajar, I saw. I stood at the entrance, my foot holding the it open. It was her. She didn't look good, but somehow she still looked just as stunning as she did the first time we met. I stopped for a minute, concerned, watching as she filled a glass and took a swig of water. She suddenly flicked her hair back and coughed it back into the sink. I stood there, not wanting to move, but also wanting to run to her. Once again she picked up the glass and ran some water through her mouth, swilling it around before spitting it out into the sink. Over the running water I heard her let out a loud sob and she pushed her arms out straight as she leant backwards, putting her weight onto the front of the countertop. I took a few steps forward, letting her know she wasn't alone. As she twisted around to see me, I stared into her eyes. I was mesmerised. Without ever saying a word, I walked right up to her and grabbed her round the waste, kissing her long and deep. Her hands wrapped around my neck pulling me in closer. I picked her up and she wrapped her legs around my waist as I turned around to lean her against the wall. She dropped down and cupped my face pulling me down to her level. I reached for her belt, fumbling with the buckle for a while as she led us to the sofa in the far corner. Pushing her down, I climbed on top of her and she pulled my face towards hers, our lips skimming each other's so we could just about taste the sweetness of each other. I could feel her breath on my cheek and the atmosphere was steaming up more with each passing second. I could feel the effect she had on me and I'm fairly sure she could too, even through the layers of thick clothing we wore, however much we didn't want to in that moment.
"Shit." Her single word left me vexed.
"Vic gave me two minutes, she'll be here any second, go pretend like you were getting food or something, I gotta go."
With that she strolled out the door, obviously still a little light headed and sick.

"Andy!" I saw her leaving the beanery.
"What?" She questioned.
"Hold up," she was being cagey, she sounded out of breath, "why are you so out of breath, what's going on?" I was genuinely worried about her, she was acting really weird and I couldn't tell if she was hiding something, or if she was sicker than she was letting on.
"I um," she paused, presumably to think of a lie. "I just chugged a glass of water, thought it might help a bit."
"Oh," I said, "did it?"
"Nope!" She popped the 'p' as she spoke. "Just made me feel sicker and now I need a pee too."
"Wow." I didn't know how else to respond. We shared a quick glance before I said, "we'll go to the toilet then!"
Andy raised her eyebrows and nodded slightly before turning around and walking in the direction of the bathroom. I didn't know what to believe anymore.

"So..." Travis started as he turned to Andy who was curled up in a chair.
"Are you gonna tell us what's wrong?" He asked.
Andy stayed quiet but a silent tear fell down her face as she tried her hardest to hide her sobs. She shrugged her shoulders and felt the pain surge in her stomach again. She wanted to get up, to go get some painkillers, but didn't have it in her to move. Letting out a moan of pain, she tried to talk.
"I really don't feel good Trav, can you grab me some painkillers?" She croaked. He didn't voice a reply, just nodded and smiled with sympathy. She mouthed the word thanks over her shoulder before turning and burying her head further into the couch. Her sigh filled the room and caught the attention of somebody walking past. She turned her head, hoping it would be Travis and she would finally get some relief from the pounding headache she felt. Instead, she was greeted with something just as effective.
"Captain," she said, acknowledging his presence.
"You okay?" He question.
"Prolly not," she didn't have it in her to lie to him.
"Go home, get some rest, you need it." His voice was calming. It was also the last thing she remembered, along with the mixed expression of fear, concern and panic plastered on his face. After that, everything went black...
