"My parents are so paranoid of me being a Pogue, like it's the worst thing that could ever happen."

Hours. It's been hours of hearing Kiara complain about her parents. If I hear one more time how bad her parents are, I may throw myself out of this ferry.

We're on our way to Charleston, sitting on the bed of the truck, on a ferry. I'm sitting down with my back against the cabin of the car, and legs spread in front of me. Kiara's sitting by my side, on the edge of the truck bed.

Pope's standing outside, half his body leaning in on the truck, still lost in the words of the mysterious letter.

"They're not paranoid of you being a Pogue," I try to tell her, for the tenth time. "They're paranoid of you getting hurt, or dying, even."

Kiara doesn't listen to me. As always, and keeps on bathing herself in self pity and misery.

"Hey, I hear they got good weed at boarding school, though." JJ jokes.

I can see his legs dangling off next to me, he's sitting on top of the car cabin, rolling a joint.

"I'm not going to boarding school."

"So I've heard." I snort, but Kiara doesn't find my commentary as amusing as I do.

"They're gonna have to kidnap me, tie me up, and throw me in a van." And there she goes again.

"You know they're your parents and you're a minor, right? Like, you have to go wherever they say, at least until you're 18. And it wouldn't be kidnapping, 'cause they are your parents."

"Why are you so bitchy to me lately?" She glares at me.

"I'm not bitchy, I'm being realistic." I chuckle under my breath. "All you do is complain, and complain. But have you stopped for a minute to think that maybe, just maybe, your mother is right?" I squint my eyes at her.

Kiara laughs, and shakes her head, raising her hands. "Whatever, girl. I'm not doing this now."

"Well, I say..." JJ jumps off, and inhales, with the joint on his lips. The then offers it to me, and I gladly take it between my thumb and index fingers." ...we just crumble some herb right now."

JJ sits down beside me, his right hand on my thigh, caressing, and moving up and down slowly. I take a long drag, and pass the joint to Kiara. She takes it from my hand without looking me in the face.

"Hey, Kie, have you tried to hit John B back on that number yet?" Pope joins the conversation.

"Like, twenty million times."
