"I'm so sorry. I've been busy the past few days and we're heading to Georgia tomorrow so I didn't really have time to talk," Harper spews when she finally calls me back.
It's the fifth of July and I have been trying to get Harper's attention, really for the past few days, but especially today. I want to tell her about last night and how it went. But really I want to talk to her too, I miss her.
"It's okay, Harper," I tell her honestly. She looks at me, almost expecting the mouthful I'm about to let out since I walked away from where I was sitting by the pool and to my room, just in case anyone was listening.
"So... what's up?" she asks and I jump into explaining how Brody invited me to the party and how I went.
"So I thought it would be awkward since the kiss, right? But it was just like before-"
"Woah, wait, kiss?" Harper cuts me off and I look at her with furrowed brows, then remember.
"Holy shit, I didn't tell you," I gasp and all of a sudden feel terrible. "Harper, I'm so sorry. I completely forgot to tell you. It was late at night and I forgot the next day and I guess I haven't thought about it since," I explain in one breath, hoping she's not mad.
"You haven't thought about it?" she asks and I shake my head. "Ky, it was your first kiss. You don't think about it? It was your first kiss with the first guy who you've dated. How do you not think about it?" she raves and I shrug.
"I was busy, I guess," I lie. "I mean, you were busy too so I haven't really had time to tell you," I say, realizing as soon as I say it it makes it sound like I'm blaming her.
"Anyway, how was it? What was it like?" she questions, looking excited.
"It was... perfect," I breath out. There I go again using that word. "We went to the ice cream shop that I told you about. On the boardwalk?" She nods so I continue. "He has a key so we went in, got some ice cream. Then he started to play a song on this old jukebox. It was Kokamo, by the Beach Boys. It was amazing. We danced and then he leaned in and kissed me.
"It was really weird, though. I had no idea what to do. You would think after all the reading I've done of kissing and the shows I've watched that I would figure out how to kiss, right? But no. I didn't know what to move or what to not do. It was so weird." I sigh, braiding the edges of my hair.
"I still can't believe you had your first kiss." And didn't tell me right away, is what she wants to add on but doesn't. I see the hurt in her eyes and I almost feel the stab of betrayal that she's probably feeling, making guilt weigh me down more.
"Harp, I'm so sorry I didn't tell you right away. I know I should have and that was the plan. But honestly, I wasn't thinking at the time." About telling anyone about it, I add on in my head. She nods, understanding like she always is.
"It's fine. Seriously, Ky," she assures and I sigh. "So, how did last night go?"

"How's Harper?" mom asks when I slide into dinner late, saying I was on the phone.
"She's good. They're leaving tomorrow for Georgia," I explain, diving into my salad.
"Yeah. Cole said they're staying for a week," M adds on and I nod.
"That's nice," she says, a small smile on her face. I continue to eat my dinner, listening to aunt Maxi talk about a house her friend is renovating.
"She said she has a whole construction team ready to help. Sarah just has to make the plans and they'll rebuild it. It's for a couple she knew from high school and they found out she designed a renovation for her parents house in their home town - a couple towns over. She thinks it would be a great idea for me to help with. You know, for a line of work," she explains and seems very happy about this idea and we all smile.
"Would you be like the Property Brothers?" I joke, but she knows I'm seriously interested in this. It was a cool thing to be able to design a house. Completely change it.
"I guess so." She laughs, smiling.
"I think it's a great idea, babe," uncle J encourages. The smile he gets on his face, watching her get all happy and excited. He truly loves her. You can tell from the way he looks at her, nothing but adoration in his eyes. I wonder what people see when Brody looks at me.
"She said they're starting renovations in two months. She offered me a job to be her co-designer. I think it'd be good," she says proudly, taking a sip of her water.
"That sounds like it'll be fun, Aunt Maxi," Michael says, and we all nod along.
"You have to send us all the pictures at the end," Becca raves.
"Will do."

"Hey, Mom," I say when she comes into my room.
"Hey, sweetie. I just wanted to talk to you for a minute." She sits on my bed and smiles innocently at me. I close my book, already knowing what this conversation is about.
"Mom," I whine and she chuckles.
"I just want to know how it's going with Brody. This is your first real boyfriend. I want you to feel like you can talk to me, because you can," she claims, climbing so she's a little closer to me. I can't help the small smile that escapes and I sigh.
"Okay." I tell her everything, from the first date and how amazing it was, to after our ice cream, and then about last night. She seems excited to talk about this and I smile as she gives me little tips.
I don't know why I didn't tell her about this before, because now when she's talking to me and helping, I feel more confident. Ready.
