5 Meeting the cadets

Hange woke me up the next morning and lead me to their office. I was taken aback at how much their office was a mess. It was like a tornado flew by and then went back again for good measure. They seemed chaotic with their personality so maybe I shouldn't expect anything else with their stuff.

"All your physical stats look normal. That's great but are you sure you're not a titan?" They squinted their eyes at me and got close to my face.

"Uh, I think I'm pretty sure." I moved away from their face. It looked like they didn't learn what personal space meant when growing up. They seemed disappointment by my answer as their smile faded a bit.

"Better luck next time." Hange put down their notebook where they had written all the information they managed to gather about me.

They tried to probe about my personal life which I quickly shut down. I didn't want to relive what happened while telling them about my childhood so I chose to not let anyone know. It would be better that way anyway. I came here to kill titans and not to let people question me about my life.

Hange stood up from their chair and we went to see what Levi's squad was doing. Hange was reassuring me over and over that the cadets of Levi are surprisingly nice and friendly people who'll make sure that I won't feel like a fish out of water.

The cadets were training sparring when we came and Levi was nowhere to be seen.

"Levi probably went to get something, I'm sure he'll be back quickly. I'll leave you now because I too have orders to do. You can try sparring with cadets in the meantime. So good luck and see ya later." Hange gave me few pats on my shoulder then turned around to go back into their office.

The cadets stopped what they were doing and they saw no superior was watching them anymore. They came to me. My eyes were jumping from one person to another observing their character.

"You're that girl that kicked our captain in the stomach, right? I'm Connie." The boy with shaved head smiled at me.

"Yeah, and she got greatly beat up after that." Laughed a girl with brown hair.

"Sasha!" A blonde boy shouted. So that girl must be named Sasha.

I curiously watched them start to bicker between each other.

The blonde boy came to me with a friendly smile.

"I'm Armin, sorry for Sasha. She is a bit too much sometimes." He chuckled anxiously while holding out a hand to shake.

"Y/N." I smiled and reciprocated the handshake.

Armin took up the role of introducing me to the rest of the people. Most of them seemed like good people who would be easy to be with. We chatted for a bit to get to know each other more. All of them were around my age so I was happy about that.

"BRATS! Who told you to stop!" Levi's powerful shouting brought our attention. The cadets quickly got back into sparring, leaving me to stand alone.

"And YOU! It wasn't enough for you yesterday that you stayed?!" He came to me. Again he measured me with his unforgiving eyes.

My hands curled into fists and I started to bite the inside of my cheek to hold myself back from punching him. He looked down at my fists and smirked.

"Ready for round two?" He said smugly.

"Sure, this time I'll be the one kneeling your body to the dirt." I responded with the same energy.

He scoffed in disbelief. I'm sure he wasn't used to someone standing up to his degrading insults. And I was more than happy to change that.

"Listen, I don't know what Hange told you but I won't babysit you just because you're new. I only agreed to teach you because they wouldn't leave my office and if you actually want to learn something you WILL listen to my orders." He demanded.

Did Hange really refuse to leave his office if he didn't teach me? If they put that much effort into persuading Levi, I needed to pay them back by at least trying to get on well with Levi. But I won't let myself be stepped on by him like I'm some kind of a muddy rug either.

"I need to see how good you're against my cadets. So pick one and fight them." He motioned to the couples who were trying to get one another to the ground. I watched them for a while, then pointed to a dark-haired boy and looked back at Levi. His eyes followed where my finger was pointing at.

"Hey, Jeager! Come here!" Levi shouted and the boy stopped fighting the other one and came to us.

"Yes sir?" Eren looked between us.

"You're going to fight this angry brat and don't hold back. I want to see her in the dirt. And something to motivate you...if you don't win over her, you'll be running laps around the camp." Levi smuged. I looked at him with wide eyes. What was he so mean for. Who spit in your tea sir that you got to be so salty. Levi turned to me and innocently smiled.

"Now go, show me how good you really are." He said in a sarcastic tone. I squinted my eyes at him. He was trying really hard to make me blow up again but I won't let him.

I went with Eren towards the others and both of us took our fighting stance.

"I'm sorry that he's so mean. I'll try to make it quick and painless. I'm sure you understand that I don't want to run laps." He said apologetically.

I was taken aback by his statement. He really thought I was going to lose. Even thought I pitied him for the threat of running so much, I didn't plan on losing. This was my fight and I wouldn't lose.

I prepared to still be cautious around Eren since he was so confident about winning. I'd be more strategic with my attacks and moves. Usually when fighting titans, I didn't plan much of my moves. I did what I deemed useful at the moment. So my moves weren't predictable and my strategy was always different and changed in the process many times. It was almost out of instinct.

Turns out Eren was all talk and not much work. After few moves I got him squirming under me on the ground. I was happy about my win and that Levi was just an exception.

"Sorry Eren, looks like you're going to go for a run. I'll try to get you a deal on the running with Levi but I don't promise anything." I chuckled and let go of him. With a loud huff, Eren's body loosened.

With a big smile I returned to Levi who had his regular stoic expression.

"So? Am I good enough, CAPTAIN?" I specifically put extra emphasis on the 'captain' just to irk him.

He rolled his eyes. "Don't get ahead of yourself brat. You won over one cadet. You're mediocre. Now come with me." He said, not showing even a bit of interest. I guess he isn't the type to compliment people or even acknowledge their success.
