This one's mine!" A voice behind you yelled, Jean sped past you quickly slicing the nape of the practice titan, "hah! That's number 3. Beat that y/n!" He said before flying off again. Bending your legs you propelled yourself off the tree you had propped yourself up against to catch your breath. The odm gear pulled you forward, cold air waking you up and energizing you. Speeding through the air you pass Jean and cut the nape of another dummy. You let yourself fall a bit and deployed the odm gear right before hitting the ground, slicing your way through the air.
"7" you say to Jean walking back to the mess hall. He sighed and shrugged, " I'll get you eventually y/n." Since odm gear training started you'd taken a liking to it, it allowed freedom. You weren't very skilled in strength or strategy, but you were fast nimble as you flew through the air, performing intricate flips. Mikasa was the only one above you and Jean behind you when it came to odm gear, and he was determined to surpass you.
"Hello there, how was training today sunshine!" Reiner said as you sat down for dinner. He had been calling you sunshine since you first became friends, not in a loving way. He was making fun at your usually grumpy disposition. You didn't talk much nor smile. Though when you did talk it was to Reiner, though it wasn't as often as most. "What do you say we go for a walk later?"
"Sure" you said. Curfew was at midnight, so between dinner (9pm ish) and midnight cadets were free to do as they pleased. "Alright! Wanna come Berty?" He said turning to his friend. Bertolt wasn't very talkative either. Reiner made up for both of your lack of words. "I'll pass, the hike today wore me out." The male said before taking a bite of his food. You finished your meal in a comfortable silence. You liked your friends, you had socialized with the other cadets but they were a bit too much for you. Talking to them took too much energy, so you stuck to your little trio, that was enough for you to be happy.
"Ready y/n?"
"Yeah let me just stop by the cabin to take off my gear."
"Ok," you open the door and begin to walk in, "wait!"
"Yeah?"
"Grab a blanket" he said. You did so and came back out within a few minutes. And you guys started off. You followed him through the training grounds, then the trees, then across the creek. Your mind ran through places he could be taking you, but landed on nothing.
"Uh Reiner, where are we going?"
"Hm." He thought for a minute, "you'll find out when we get there" he said looking back at you with a devilish smile. You walked for a bit more then he stopped. He bent down and cleared a few bushes out of the way revealing a clearing. It was a patch of grass the size of an average room above a small cliff. The cliff overlooked a grassy meadow that stretched for miles. The moon gleamed above you, lighting up the clearing. It was beautiful. "Wow" you say at the sight, Reiner turns to you pulling the blanket off your shoulder and stretching it out onto the grass.
"How'd you find this place." You say still marveling at the beauty.
"I like to go in walks when I'm, uhm, upset. To clear my head" he says sitting down beckoning you to sit with him. " it's nice right?" He said practically gleaming with pride about his spot.
"Yeah, it's beautiful" you say sitting down. The two of you sat there simply watching the moon for a few minutes. You could feel him glancing over to you every once in a while. You looked back. Your eyes locked and his face turned red, the moon ever so gracefully illuminated his features. His lips naturally curved down, he had a defined nose and cheek bones, and his eyes. They were sad eyes covered with a mask of joy. You knew he was a lie. His eyes gave it away, you could see his pain through them. You never said anything though, you were a lie too. Your personality was based on fear. You pretended you were strong, you pretended you were fearless, you pretended you didn't care about anyone or anything. You related to Reiner in that sense. You were both lies.
You realized you had been studying him too long, lost in thought. A warm blush passed your cheeks as you looked away. "Why'd you join the cadet Corp?" Reiner said, looking for a way out of the tension of silence.
"To survive." You said bluntly.
"Survive?"
"Yeah, after the wall fell I had nothing. Food, a place to sleep. The cadet Corp was a way out of poverty and starvation."
"Did your parents not work in the fields to provide?"
"They died in Shiganshina" you said, turning to him.
His face twisted a bit in guilt "Oh, I'm sorry I shouldn't have assumed"
"It's ok."
"Did you.. see the when they..." He trailed off. He spoke asif he was playing with fire. Your mind flooded with the memories, you closed your eyes. 'Get out, get out, get out'
"Yes."
He cringed
"That must have been horrible, I'm sorry y/n"
"Why are you apologizing, not like it's your fault" you saw something change in his face. Almost like he remembered something unpleasant. He looked up at the moon again, " y/n.... I'm not a good person." His voice was serious and solemn. You looked at him surprised at his sudden change. You weren't sure what to say, so you just looked up at the moon.
"I'm envious of the moon." You say finally.
"The moon? Why?"
"It gets to just sit up there and watch. It doesn't have to get involved, just observe. To it we are simply specks of dust in a never ending cycle."
He pondered this for a minute, "yeah," he said, "I agree."
You sat there for a while longer until you accidentally fell asleep. You woke up the next morning in your bed with the blanket lightly over your body.
