The weight of the blanket rested gently on your legs, which were crossed over each other as you sat on the bed. "Wow, we're about to graduate huh. Crazy"
"I can't believe it"
"I'm just happy we all got top ten" you said, joining Reiner and Bertholdts conversation. "Of course we did, we're awesome." Reiner's lips formed into a proud smile. You had been living with these boys for the past two years, they had become your new family. "We're all going for the scouts right?" Bertolt questioned. "I am" Reiner said, he turned his head to you, "yeah so am I"
"We must be crazy huh" Bertolt nervously laughed, " we got top ten and we're willingly joining the scouts."
"Yeah well, we need to get revenge on those big bastards somehow. And staying in here just won't do that. Plus, I want out of these stupid walls" you say. Even before the fall of Shiganshina you had felt cramped in the walls, you longed to find out what was outside. "What's the point of living if you're stuck in one place doing the same mundane things for the rest of your life. I was talking to Armin, apparently outside of the walls there's this thing called the ocean. It's like a lake, but bigger. And it has salt water!"
"Yeah we know, Armin told us too" Reiner said, they didn't seem nearly as amazed as you were by the ocean. Still, you wanted to see it one day.
"Oh man I'm tired" Reiner said in a yawn before stretching and leaning onto you, resting his head on your lap. "Hello sunshine."he said with a smile looking up at you. You giggled a bit pushing him away. "Aw come on, I'm comfy." He said, "fine" you gave in. He lowered his head back onto you, comfortably resting on your thighs. You ran your fingers through his soft short hair, feeling him relax into you.
"ALRIGHT CADETS, CURFEW. L/N GET TO BED, YOU'RE ON WALL DUTY TOMORROW"*the next morning*
"SASHA, DO YOU KNKW HOW MUCH TROUBLE WE'LL GET IN IF YOU GET CAUGHT WITH THAT!!?" Connie yelled at the brown haired girl who was currently drooling over the considerably large hunk of meat she was holding.
"But also, I call dibs on a slice." He says taking a complete 180. "Me too" Eren and the others chimed in. "Yeah, save me a bit. But for now you should probably hide it. They'd have your head for that, you know how rare meat is."
"Yeah yeah" Sasha says, breaking her intense stare at the meat. She takes a step and bends down, opening a small box and placing the meat inside. "I can't wait to make sandwiches, and stew, and-"
Your vision filled with a bright yellow almost lighting like flash, your eyes closed out of instinct to the blinding light. And within an instant you felt a flash of heat and your feet left the ground. Your eyes blinked open but we're clouded with fog. Wind rushed through your hair and enveloped your body. 'What.. what's going on" Your stomach dropped, you were falling, and the ground was getting closer at an alarmingly quick rate. You went limp. Fear overtook your body and completely cleared your mind from every useful thought other than, 'this is how I die'
"Y/N!" Eren's voice rang through your ears, your brain woke up from it's panic induced coma pulling your arms to the odm trigger, deploying it. The odm gear tugged at your waist pulling you up to the side of the wall. "THIS IS OUR CHANCE, LET'S KILL THIS BASTARD!" Eren screamed before shooting up the wall. Without thinking you followed, you weren't sure what he meant or what would be up there. Curiosity drove you up.
Your legs moved with ease on the wall with the tug of the odm gear pulling you up, the top of the wall getting closer and closer. Just as you reached the top your eyes met the horror that had pushed you off the wall. The colossal titan. You had seen titan's before, and terrifying as they were, it was nothing compared to this monstrosity. It was made of muscle and bones with no skin, it's eyes were sunken in, and the sheer size was unlike anything you'd ever seen. While you never saw the titan that broke the wall, you'd heard from the others what it looked like. This was him, the titan that destroyed your life. That killed everyone you loved. Anger bubbled in you threatening to burst at any moment, but you had to stay composed. You watched Eren attack the beast, the movements were slow. It's only advantage was its size and possibly the steam it had blown off earlier.
Taking a running start you hooked your odm gear onto the titan's arm, swinging up towards the nape. It lifted it's giant hand trying to swat you like a measly fly. The anger burst. This beast saw you as nothing more than a minor inconvenience. He sees humans as something he can kill without consequence. Rage filled your body, your hands had a mind of their own as they used the odm gear to hook onto the titans grotesque face. Propping yourself up against its face, you looked the horrid creature right in the eye. Your mind was thinking of nothing other than the devastation this thing has caused.
"WHY ARE YOU HERE, WHY"
It just stared at you, "MY LIFE WAS JUST GETTING OK AGAIN, AND YOU COME AND RUIN IT. AGAIN! YOU BITCH, YOU SELFISH, DISGUSTING, BITCH. YOU DESERVE TO ROT IN HELL." You yelled with all your might, practically tearing out your vocal cords. Your eyes brimmed with tears, and for the tiniest moment you saw sadness in its grey eyes. These eyes, they seemed familiar. Almost human. The titan began to raise it's hand to squash you, but you didn't move. It was right on the tip of your tongue, you knew these eyes.
"...Bertolt?" The hand stopped and the eyes widened. A moment of silence, as if it was shocked. You weren't completely sure, I mean it made no sense. Bertolt couldn't be a titan, but you spent the last 2 years with him, you knew those eyes. You knew the way they curved slightly down, the exact shade of grey they were. Before you could finish your thought the titan blew out hot steam just as it had before knocking you off your balance and blowing you away. This time you were prepared, you used your odm gear to swing back to the wall and within a second the titan was gone. "What..."
"Alright cadets, there has been a titan breach in Trost. We need you, as soldiers, to keep the titans at bay until we evacuate everyone" One of your superiors explained to the cadet Corp. They had called everyone in after your group reported that the wall fell.
There were mumbles amongst the crowd, but you could barely hear anything that was going on around you. Your mind was a buzz with so many things it was hard to even make out a single thought, the only thing that stood out was fear. Fear of facing the titans again. Fear of losing everyone again. Your throat closed up and your vision went blurry. 'No no no no, keep calm, it's ok, it's ok, it's ok' you told yourself though you knew it was not ok, nothing was ok. You looked up at Reiner who stood tall next to you, he seemed completely composed and focused, not even looking down at you. How can he be so calm? You looked down at your hands which were shaking rapidly, your legs felt as though they might give out at any minute. 'Stay strong' you told yourself. Puffing your chest you looked straight ahead, though your eyes were brimming with tears and your stomach was queasy you put on your best brave face.
You looked up at Reiner once more, he was still looking straight ahead completely unfazed, almost like he expected this to happen. His arms were hanging at his side. Taking your hand that was still shaking you slid it into his, it was selfish but you needed comfort. You needed to know that there was someone you could rely on. Without looking down at you he squeezed your hand ever so gently, he was telling you it was going to be ok.
"Alright, all cadets that saw the titan that broke the wall. Come with me for a second. The others, start preparing your gear. We need to leave ASAP." the commander said.
You reluctantly unlatched your hand from Reiner's and made your way over to the small group of cadets talking with the commander. He asked all the expected questions, what did the titan look like, what did it do, ect. Then dismissed you. You headed over to where you spotted Reiner and Bertolt talking while getting their gear together.
"They said my name Reiner."
"How would they know, there's no way they know"
"I don't know Reiner, maybe it's best if we.."
"NO, we can't, I won't!"
"Reiner, please be reasonable, it's our safest option."
"I'll find another way."
"Reiner, I really think it'd be better if we-"
Bertolt stopped mid sentence once he noticed your presence. They both looked up at you and stared for a moment. The silence between the three of you bearing down on your shoulders, threatening to crush you.
"Ahem, I refilled your gas and blades y/n" Reiner said, breaking the tension and handing you your gear.
"Thanks." You said, your voice shaky and sore. "I'm going to go get my gear set up," Bertolt said as he got up to leave. You watched him walk away, the tap of his boots against the stone floor slowly fading until it was just you and Reiner. You looked at your hands again, they were still shaking. The tears sitting at the edge of your eyes threatened to spill over. You hadn't cried in a long time, since before you joined the cadet Corp. Your breathing quickened, 'don't cry, don't cry, don't cry' you told yourself, but thinking that only made the tears come quicker. They started to roll down your face uncontrollably, more and more till you were heaving.
"Y/n..." Reiner said, placing his hand on your back in an attempt to comfort you, but it only reminded you that you were crying in front of him, you were vulnerable. You covered your face with your hands sobbing into them. "Hey y/n, it'll be ok." Reiner said, you didn't respond. "I promise."
"How do you know" you said lifting your face to look at him, "how do you know it'll be ok. I could die, Bertolt could die, YOU could die!" you said your voice cracking through the sobs. You looked down at your lap, you didn't want to see his face, didn't want to know what he was thinking. There was a pause. "I won't die y/n, and I won't let you die either, or Bertolt."
" You could-" you started in protest, but before you could finish he cupped your face with both hands forcing you to look at him. "I promise y/n, it'll be ok" he said, not so much in a calming tone, more authoritative and certain. You simply nodded and he released you.
"Y/n, I have a question. Where do you think titans come from?" You looked at him confused.
"Reiner, it's hardly the time to be coming up with theories."
"Just answer."
"Uh ok," you weren't sure, you'd never really thought about where they came from. "I don't know." You say giving up.
"Alright." He said seeming satisfied with your answer which only confused you further.
"ALRIGHT CADETS, MOVE OUT"
