suspicion

"Alright dear, you are well enough to leave." the nurse said unwrapping the gauze to show the giant teeth marks on your side. They were scabbed over and had stitches running through them. It didn't look great but for only being in for a week you were in decent shape, and you could comfortably walk around again. "Just no excessive movement for a week, ok?"
"Yes ma'am" you said, packing up your things. She gave you a soft smile.
"And good luck with that boy."
"What?" You chuckled with a nervous blush. Reiner stopped visiting for a few days after the bonfire but, according to the nurses, before (during your coma) he was practically glued to your bedside. The nurse patted your shoulder softly, "Goodbye dear."
"Bye, thank you" You said before picking up your bag and walking out of the hospital.
The sun warmed your cheeks as you stepped outside onto the training grounds. Most of the cadets were working out, Shadis monitoring them. You made your way over to him, "Ah L/n, good to see you back kid." he said with a genuine smile that took you aback a bit. The firm man showing concern for you seemed foreign.
"Hello sir." you said saluting, he dismissed your salute.
"I'm guessing you're not in the state to train huh?"
"No not really sir, I can only do low level workouts. No odm gear." you responded. He sighed, thinking for a moment.
"Well, we are graduating in a week anyways there's not much more I can teach you. Feel free to sit out on whatever you feel necessary."
"Yes sir, thank you."
"Don't push yourself, cadet." He said, giving you a pat on the shoulder before heading off.
You dropped your things off at the dorm and made your way outside. Half the cadets were on a hike, so The others were just lazing about. Slacking off while Shadis was off leading the others. You sat on a bench at the end of the training area, watching them. Eventually some took notice of you and came to talk. They asked how you were, what happened ect. And after a bit you had formed a small audience.
"Wait, so how did you get injured?" Connie asked.
"I'm not really sure, I don't remember much."
"I heard Reiner saved her from a titan." A girl in the back added. There were some oohs and chuckles from the crowd.
"Well actually Marco-"
"I heard that he stayed with her all night while she was in the hospital. I bet they're together!" Another voice added.
"I um, well-" You tried to correct them but your voice was miniscule compared to their excited shouts and giggles,
"I saw them holding hands once!!"
"I bet she loves him!"
"Aw, that's so cute Reiner and y/n!"
"What's this about me?" A strong voice from behind the crowd chimes in. The crowd goes silent as they turn to see Reiner giggling behind them, you shyly wave to him from the bench you were on. He waved back with a smile.
"Come on guys, let's not harass them. They just got back." He says shooing them away. They grumble a bit but go back to their training. He really was the big brother of the cadet corp.
"Did you hear what they were saying?" You ask as he sits next to you.
"Not really, what was it?"
"Oh uhm.." You blush, you weren't usually nervous around Reiner. So then why was your stomach filled with butterflies?
"It's ridiculous really." You said looking at your hands.
"Oh please, just tell me y/n." he chuckles.
"Well, they said. That we are like a couple and that I... " You laugh a bit, "That I love you." You looked up at him, he was staring at you, a slight blush formed across his face. His gaze bore down on you, making you even more nervous. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"No reason." He looked away and scratched his neck. "You don't love me?" He asked.
"Well of course I do, but that's not the love they meant." you said softly, refusing to make eye contact with him. Suddenly you felt a hand on your head, ruffling your hair, "I knew you loved me sunshine!" He beamed. "Knock it off Reiner!" You said pushing his hand off you. You acted annoyed, but in reality this was the happiest you've been in a while. With all the chaos, with how he acted that night. You were just happy to be back to normal. You watched the others train until sundown, joining in occasionally but only for short periods of time.
You followed the crowd bustling into the mess hall, grabbed your plate, and sat down at your usual table. Bertolt was already there.
"Hey, been a while." You said sitting across from him. He just nodded. "How've you been?" You said trying to make conversation. You had missed him.
"Good," he said, not looking up from his plate.
"Uhm, alright." You say. He had never been talkative, but he seemed extra distant today. The two of you sat in silence for a bit, "Are you, ok?" You asked, this seemed to take him by surprise, he finally looked up at you. "You're just being extra quiet." You explained, he stared at you a second, grey eyes studying you. "Yeah I'm fine, sorry." He says going back to his food. "Did Reiner tell you what happened after, you know."
"He says you guys were scared of the titan, but Marco saved me."You said, he nodded, looking down."I don't blame you though. I may not remember it, but I don't know if I'd be able to save you guys in a situation like that." That was a lie, you'd fight till your dying breath for them. They were your only living family, if you thought about it you really didn't have much to live for. Why not give them your life. You only said that for his sake.
"Yeah.." he said, training his eyes on the ground. "Do you know about Eren?" He asked.
"No?" you said.
"He's a titan." He said plainly.
"Uh what, haha" You nervously laughed. Erens a titan? That sentence didn't even make sense. How could anyone be a titan? You thought back to that day in trost, the colossal titan. His eyes, the humanity in them. You had dismissed this morsel of a theory almost immediately, a human couldn't be titan, right?
"I'm not really sure how, but he can turn into a titan at will." Your mind went blank.
"He..." You couldn't even form words.
"Pretty crazy huh?"
"Y.. yeah" You hesitated. "I'll be right back" You stood up clumsily knocking into your plate causing a loud clang. Rushing to the door, you walked out of the mess hall into the forest. You had no proof, or really any real reason to think it, but could Bertolt be a titan? Thoughts swarmed your brain as you walked at a steady pace through the forest. Eventually sitting on a large rock you came to the conclusion that you would just have to watch him. Study his words, watch his actions, for any hint that he may be a titan. Maybe you could ask Eren, no. Best not to tell anyone about this yet, not till you have more proof. Even then were you really willing to give up your friend? Yes. No. Fuck.
You stood up and made your way back to the mess hall, opening the doors and walking in you saw Reiner laughing with Bertolt. The sight reminded you of something, these were your friends. You'd been with them for years, nothing suspicious ever happening. You let out a small chuckle, 'I can't believe myself, that I would accuse him of something like this. I don't even have a reason. He's not a titan, no way' you thought to yourself sitting down and joining the boy's conversation. From that point you promised to yourself that you would let it go.
