SAGE WAS SHOCKED WHEN SHE opened mason's passenger door and found someone sitting in the front seat. it wasn't declan because she could clearly see the west ham boy in the back, playing with his goddaughter.
she decided to not cause a scene, and sit in the back on the other side of dec. mason had introduced the person in the front as his 'friend', kennedy. the new girl's small smile didn't go unnoticed by declan as mason introduced sage to her.
the drive from london to portsmouth was around two hours long. sage spent the majority of it joking around with declan and azelia in the back, while kennedy and mason were sat silent in the front.
mason stopped at a petrol station to allow azelia to stretch her legs and to fill up his car. declan and azelia ran inside to grab snacks for everyone, knowing how hungry they all get on long drives.
it was just kennedy, sage and mason in the car so he saw it as a perfect opportunity to talk to sage. "yo ken, can you switch seats with sage for the rest of the way?"
"of course," she complied after a moment of silence. she swapped seats with sage, now sitting in her old seat next to declan.
kennedy watched the way mason would always throw quick glances at sage. whenever they were at a red light, the first thing he would do is look her way to check if she was alright. she saw how he would place his hand on her knee, keeping it there until she pushed it away, whispering about his girlfriend being in the back. then she would hear him defend himself and say that she was only a friend.
that cycle repeated for about another hour until the group of four were sitting outside mason's parent's house. the chelsea boy ushered declan, sage and kennedy inside, wanting to let azelia play around with the steering wheel for a bit like he had promised.
sage and declan made their way through the house, not taking off their shoes as they were going straight to the garden anyways. kennedy followed behind, feeling a little lost and left out.
mason's entire family were scattered around the garden. parents, siblings, cousins and all. they all welcomed both sage and declan with warm hugs, claiming how much they have missed the two.
when mason came strolling in with azelia on his hip, the garden erupted into 'awhhs' and other greetings. during all of this, kennedy had kept herself to the side not wanting to interupt the family moment.
mason's sister, jasmine, was the first to notice the smaller girl standing away from the crowd. she made her way over, introducing herself. "are you declan's girlfriend or something?" she asked after a while of talking to the freckled girl.
"no, mason's," she replied, staring at her supposed boyfriend. he had his arm around sage's waist, who sat comfortably on his lap. "but i don't think he likes me that much..."
jasmine followed her trail of eyesight and saw her brother cuddling up to sage. don't get her wrong, jasmine absolutely adored sage but she couldn't deny that mason discarding his new girlfriend to the side at a family function was down right out of order. "i'm so sorry, why don't you come and sit with me? you can meet my daughter summer."
IT WAS WAY LATER IN THE EVENING, around 6 specifically, when kennedy decided she's had enough. she'd been watching how sage and mason interacted with each other all day. it made her feel like shit.
he could never be away from her for more than five minutes, always leaving or pausing conversations with family members to check up on her and their daughter. when they were sitting together, his hand was always on her thigh or the small of her back. every. fucking. time.
she couldn't help but feel a little dumb, he hadn't paid any attention to her. instead just leaving the girl to mingle on her own. kennedy spent most of her time with jasmine before deciding she was over it all.
she called an uber that was about ten minutes away. this gave her enough time to say her goodbyes to mason's family, get jasmine's phone number and make peace with sage.
the two girls were sitting by the front door, sage on the stairs and the other standing up. kennedy grabbed her bag as she began to explain herself.
"i just want to apologise if i came across any sort of way. i now understand that trying to have a thing with a man that has a baby mother was a dumb move on my part, and i'm sorry if i got in the way.
i see how he looks at you when you aren't looking and it's honestly the cutest thing in the world. it's obvious that you two can't leave each other alone and you're always on his mind. i'm not trying to work your relationship for you but i really do think that you two could actually work out."
"i don't know if i trust him, honestly. but thank you for the apology. you didn't come off any type of way, you're actually the nicest girlfriend i've met," sage smiled and pulled kennedy in for a warm hug. "are you sure you're going to be okay?"
"my best friend lives down here, i'll be fine." the two hugged once again and swapped numbers. sage had kindly invited kennedy to a party in a few weeks just before her phone buzzed, letting her know the uber was outside.
