Chapter Seven

Luna and Kale walked arm-in-arm into the corridor. Kale said something with a grin, causing Luna to laugh. Draco watched glumly from the Slytherin table.

Isolated, he ate his breakfast alone.

"Draco!" called out a familiar voice.

Looking up, Draco met his gray eyes to green. Red hair and freckles, too. "Ginny?"

She sat across from him, a wide smile. Slytherins gave curious glances, but none said anything. They didn't want to mess with the Slytherin King or the Boy Who Lived's girlfriend.

"So, how is it, being Head Boy?" Draco was stunned by her politeness.

"It-It's fine, I guess. The dorms are the best part." Draco shrugged as he spoke.

Ginny's smile grew painfully large, and that frightened him. "Speaking of dorms, Luna's birthday is this weekend - Friday, to be exact - and we want to throw a surprise sleepover for her. Is that okay with you?"

Draco's mind was racing. Birthday, Friday, sleepover? Before he even thought of the consequences, he said, "Yeah, sure."

Ginny squealed, leaning over the table to give him a quick hug. When she pulled back, she said, "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Then she left.

Most of the Great Hall was watching him as Ginny left. They were all stunned that he conversed with a Gryffindor, but the awe on their faces when a Gryffindor hugged him and he didn't reply with a hex... All eyes were on him.

Draco grabbed his bag from the seat beside him and exited the table, then the Great Hall.

When he arrived at his first class, N.E.W.T. Charms, he had a headache. If he was in Potions, he could brew a small headache remedy before class. But he doesn't take Potions until his last period.

A friend of his mom has promised him a place as a healer at St. Mungo's, only if he got at least O's on all his exams. She was one of the healers who came to Hogwarts after the war.

Draco set his bag on the back of his chair, pulling out the things that he will need for the class. Charms book, wand, quill, ink, and parchment. When he sat down, the chair rocked; it had a short leg. And every time Draco shifted, the chair moved with him.

Draco sighed. Charms for two periods.

Merlin, this is going to be a long day.

"Promise your watchdog won't get on to me for walking you to class?" Kale asked Luna with a grin.

Luna chuckled. "Pinky Promise."

As they stepped out into the halls, she held up her pinky. Kale wrapped his small finger around hers with a smile.

They continued walking, chit-chatting about their classes.

"I am taking classes to become an Unspeakable, like my father," Kale had told her.

"Really? I've been to the Department of Mysteries. I thought that all of the Prophecies shattered." Luna looked up at Kale.

"Well, the Prophecies aren't the only division in the Department. I'm thinking of working with Space theories, or maybe the brains. I'd like to understand more of why the Magical Gene is suppressed throughout years, only to make a reappearance in muggle-borns. Muggle-borns are often very intelligent, too." Kale told of this with fascination.

"My friend Hermione is a muggle-born, and she is very intelligent. I also know a handful of Ravenclaws who are muggle-born, and I've never met anyone more clever," Luna agreed.

Kale laughed. "My great, great, great grandmother was a muggle-born, and she created the Cure for Boils potion."

Luna took on a look of awe. "Your family created that potion?"

Kale shrugged. "She was often teased by pure-bloods who hexed her with nasty hives. So, she created a cure for herself, and actually ended up marrying a pure-blood."

Luna's eyebrows scrunched. "She married a man who teased her?"

"A woman," he corrected. "And, yes, she did. She often forgave easily, much like you."

Luna blushed. "It's better to see the best in people, and often times, they will reciprocate."

Kale nodded. "That's a good idea, how did you figure this out?"

"I didn't," Luna admitted shyly. "My mom told me to always be kind, even to people who aren't as kind to you."

Kale scowled. "Is that why you like the Malfoy kid?"

Luna stopped abruptly, eyes trained on Kale. "Wh-What? Draco?"

"Yes, I see the way that you two are bonded. You're close," he concluded, looking into Luna's eyes.

"You're wrong," Luna stated. "Draco Malfoy and I have a very stale relationship."

Kale's eyes grew softer. "Stale? Is that why he was worried about your eating habits?"

Luna's blood grew cold as she looked at the floor. "It's normal for a person to be compassionate - it's an instinct." It was true, she had read it in a book on behavioural studies.

"Is that why he interrupted us at the Clock Tower? Or why he is so cold to me? Or the way he gave you a lift on the way to breakfast this morning?" Kale's voice was urging her to say something. She said nothing.

Finally, "I didn't realise."

"He cares," he said, sounding defeated. "And it's getting in the way of me showing how much I care."

Luna met his warm hazel eyes. They pleaded. A loud bell sounded throughout the corridor, the first of three bells.

"I'm truly sorry, Kale, but I must get to class." With that, Luna turned down the hall, walking into Muggle Studies.

It's short, I know, stab me (actually, let's not do that). I really hope this doesn't bother you - it's more of a filler chapter.
