Fiona ignored the vibration for a short moment. She wanted to be lost in her comfort though at times she thought it was slipping. Her phone vibrated again, it was Paul again. She sighed, not wanting to respond to her Dad. She crawled off the bean bag, and shuffled outside the library, letting her earbuds slip down to her neck.
"You still look short, Brat," Paul said waiting outside the door. Truth be told, he thought something had happened to her and was about to head in. Fiona chuckled slightly, still feeling on edge. She hopped the tears on her face had vanished. Paul grasped his daughter that he had missed dearly. Fiona smiled embracing her father back.
"Well, old brat, it has to come from somebody," She said. Paul chuckled. He was anything but short. While Paul was 6'1, Fiona was only 5'0. Fiona stepped back from her father's grasp still wondering what was going on. "Dad, what are you doing here?" She asked, dropping her gaze to the ground. Paul sighed, knowing what he was doing.
"There's something I need to talk to you about. It's better to say in person," Her father told her. Fiona felt her concern rise. Her brain right away went to him falling for someone. That's what she wanted it to be. Paul glanced at his daughter's eyes, sensing her concern. He darted his eyes, in regret and fear. "Come with me, okay?" He asked. Fiona nodded, unable to find the correct words.
Paul led Fiona to his car and gestured for her to sit in the passenger side. Fiona gave him a weak smile before entering the car. The tension was high making Fiona feel her anxiety bubble to the surface. Paul didn't know what to say to her. How do you tell someone their life is a lie? He was about to break the truth to her. And How? Paul sighed and danced his fingers through his thinning hair.
"Do you remember when you were eight?" Paul started. "When you got into that car accident with your mother?" He sighed. Fiona looked at him and raised his eyebrow. She instantly knew this wasn't about him moving on and felt his heart drop.
"Yeah. The one that caused my amnesia? I had to relearn a lot of things. Dad, what's going on?" Fiona asked, unsure if she truly wanted that answer. "I'm worried did something happen?" It was a natural response to ask questions. At least that's what she sold herself.
"There's no easy way to say this, so I'm going to start with an apology," Paul started. Fiona looked at him again, wondering what he was avoiding. "I'm the leader of the German-America Mafia, Fi. Back then your mother was divorcing me and I thought it'd be safer to protect you then. I had to high the truth to protect you. There's so much you don't know, It's just not easy to explain." Fiona couldn't process any emotions. Her ears had to be deceiving her right? This couldn't be the truth. She looked down and felt a tear float on her face.
"Why are you telling me now, Dad? If you needed to protect me and all," Fiona asked more harshly than she expected. Paul expected her anger but was still shocked. He sighed slightly, still not prepared to speak to her.
"You know why I dropped away for eight months?" Paul asked. Fiona just nodded, lost for words. Tear weld up in her eyes and she quickly blinked them away. "It wasn't a vacation. We had a rat on the inside, and I needed to protect you again. Things are getting worse with our enemies, and for your protection, I need to have you move in with me. If you really don't want to, I can put a guard with you at all times. It's not that I didn't want you to be with me all this time, I have! But now I need to have you here. Fiona, I understand that this is a huge decision and I'll give you the time to think about it, but please. Think about your safety." Fiona immediately felt betrayed as those words left her father's mouth.
She kept her gaze down and she processed this. Her life was a lie. She was a lie. Was Fiona even her name? She thought quickly. Then she laughed at the thought. Though she didn't live with her father they always had been close. Except for the past eight months. Fiona released her anger and was replaced by pity. Pity for her father. She felt terrible that Paul had to go through all of this, alone. Everything he went through was because of her. In a moment of self-doubt, she saw an opportunity. One to leave all her problems behind. A way to truly discover what has been bothering her for so long. She looked back at her father who just looked down at the floor under him.
"I forgive you, Dad," Fiona said. She smiled at her father genuinely as he looked at her. He didn't smile, only frowned. "And of course I'll move in, okay? I'm not angry." Paul still didn't meet the slightest excitement or joy that she wasn't angry. He just looked around the car, avoiding talking. "There's something else isn't there?" Fiona sighed.
"You're a twin, Fiona," Paul said. Fiona glanced at her father in complete shock. Twin?
"I have a sister? A twin sister?" Fiona perked up. Excitement, rage, and sadness chilled her bones, but she choose to remain positive for Paul.
"Though he acts like a pussy, his name is Jonas. Jonas Alexander. Your twin brother." Paul said to her. Fiona tilted her head confused. How could he be a pussy if he was Mafia-raised? She wouldn't dare ask that question, though it rang in her mind. She ended up masking her anxiety with a small chuckle. "I'll drive you to your mother's for you to get a few things, alright?" Paul said starting the car. Fiona took a deep breath and smiled. Again a mask.
"Okay. I don't think it would take long for me to grab everything," Fiona said. Paul nodded, trying to focus on his driving. Fiona glanced into the mirror and noticed that Jayden was following her car. She instantly slumped into her seat slightly. That didn't go unnoticed by Paul. He went to question her, but knew her being on edge was from what he just explained. At least that's what he thought.
Paul continued to drive down the road until he reached his ex-wife's house. In that case Fiona's mother. The pair were on edge to see Mary. They both sat there before unbuckling their seatbelts. They stepped out of the car smiling at each other, not prepared for what's in store.
