"Oh god, Charlie. How come your leaving me like this?" I mumbled against Charlie as I tightly hugged him. I'm sure he hated it but I didn't care. I loved him so much and I honestly didn't want him to leave.
"Mom, why don't you calm down? I'll be back soon. You can ride my bike while I'm gone it'll remind you of me." He said trying to think of a way to help me out. He was the sweetest but a weird kind of sweet. Compassionate is the word.
"I might just go that, Charlie. But don't worry about me. Have fun, you guys. And if you dare don't call me every day I will—"
"Mom!"
"Dani!" Dave and Charlies voices overlapped with a hint of announce. I knew they had to get going and me lecturing them wasn't gonna help. Dave was still an excited kid at heart. I could tell he just wanted to go to Las Vegas to go to the casino.
"Okay, okay! Jesus, you too," I laughed at them before hugging Charlie one last time, "I'm sorry I just love you."
"I love you too. And we'll see you in just a little while." Charlie told me. I nodded at his words and smiled. I'm sure Charlie could make good decisions even if Dave wasn't there.
"Do you remember my phone number? The house phone number?" I asked Charlie just for one last clarification.
"Yes, mom. I promise I'll call you." He said before hopping into Daves car and buckling himself in. Dave rolled the window down and I leaned into kiss him goodbye.
"I'm sorry for leaving, Dani. And I'm sorry this is all so quick and fast I just—"
"David. It's fine. I love you both. Now, go have fun. Okay?" I said kissing his cheek. They both nodded before pulling out of the driveway. I couldn't believe I agreed to let Dave take Charlie. But I knew they'd be fine. They always are. And Dave loves Charlie with every bit of his heart.
The next couples of hours went by painfully slow. It was already 11:00 at night and I couldn't think of anything to do or listen to. Watch, draw, paint. Nothing. I was bored out of my mind. I kept thinking about Kurt for some reason. Just some old memories. I still remember the smile on his face when I opened the door that one night. His smile was hopeful and bright as he stood there with tons of Marigold flowers in his hands. I wished I could see that smile one more time. But of course, it was gone. Maybe not forever but for a long time. The phone rung in the distance and I moped my way off the couch and to the phone before picking it up.
"Hello?"
"Hi, mom!" I heard Charlie's little voice say.
"Hey, Char! What's up?" I asked very excited that he remembered to call me.
"Um," he sounded nervous, "nothing. But um dad left me with this lady and it's been forever and he's not coming back—"
"What?! What lady?! Charlie!" I said scared beyond what my mind could comprehend. Fuck, Dave. I knew he'd do this. I knew it.
"I don't know. He said it's Aunt Lisa?" Charlie said. My heart instantly was relieved. Oh god, Charlie scared me to death.
"Oh, good. Okay. Charlie it's 11:00 what are you doing up?" I asked trying to find a new topic and not get mad at Dave to Charlie.
"Dad isn't back yet! I'm really tired but I want dad to tuck me in before I sleep I can't go to bed without him!" Charlie whined.
"Have Aunt Lisa tuck you in, I'm sure she will." I suggested.
"No way! I want my dad, momma." Charlie sounded like he going to cry.
"Put Lisa on the phone, babe. Please?" I asked softly. I couldn't believe Dave was leaving Charlie behind, he promised he wouldn't.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Lisa! It's Dani, do you have any idea where Dave went?" I asked kindly.
"Oh, hi, Dani! Yes, he told me that he was going out with drinking with some friends but he'd be here a little after 11 to pick Charlie up." Lisa told me.
"Fucking shit. Okay. Lisa if he's really drunk please do not let him drive. Please." I begged.
"Of course I won't. But Charlie's getting a little upset over this and I can't reach Dave at all." She said with concern for Charlie.
"Can you just put a movie on for him and turn the lights off? It might make him tired." I suggested.
"Sure thing. I'll talk to you later, Dani. And don't worry about Dave I won't let him do anything stupid." She assured me. I knew she wouldn't. Dave would be hearing about this later.
