"They can't sue us can they Scarlett?"I ask her

"I don't think so" she replies

"For 2 girls who work for a law firm we are clueless," I say she shrugs

"I manage the reception, you are the PA," she says

"Please I still have baby brain," I say and this time she laughs

"Girl no"

When I was pregnant I had the worst baby brain, I would forget the smallest things, and remember the most irrelevant things, and I was so emotional all the time. I cried at everything, and so did Scarlett. We cried together.

"I think I need to pay attention more- I do want to be a lawyer"

"I agree"

"I don't think they can, from what I remember"

"They can't, it's not right," she says

"Besides, he hasn't been involved in her life for the past 3 months let alone the 9 months since you got pregnant"

"I know"

"A whole year T, a whole fucking year- he didn't call or text, nothing"

"Scar, I didn't tell him, it's my fault"

"But he never asked or called?"

"Because I blocked him"

"Bullshit, he could have called me or Gray"

"Gray said squat and you blocked him to"

"Besides the point, he's the dick and he's dating the evil incarnate," she says and I laugh

Scarlett lies down on the hospital bed and resumes flicking through the tv channels until she settles on something that she likes. But my mind won't stop ticking

"We can't tell Jane" I abruptly say

"Why, she can help us"

"Because it will ruin her. Leave a bad impression of Ellie"

"But she will take your side"

"Yeah that's the point" I reply

"I don't understand"

"It will make things worse"

"Tori, we can't risk this"

"We aren't risking anything," I say

I sigh and look down at the sweet dozing baby in my arms. Why is life so complicated? This was never my intention. We sit and silence and I know Scarlett is right.

"Look I know you are right, just, let's leave it for now"

"Okay, fine- but if I hear another threat I am going to be yelling for Jane," she says and I laugh

"Yelling for who darling?" I hear a voice say and I look up it's my mother

"No one Mama Kat, no one," Scarlett says and she winks at me

"Hey mama," I say

"Hey baby, how is she?"

"She's okay, the doctor said she thinks the reaction is from her needles- where is Jane?"

"She has gone to get coffee for us all, said the smell of hospitals is nasty" we all laugh, that is typical Jane Shepherd, I swear her vanilla flavoured candles made me want to barf during my first trimester, but Jane loves them, so I had to keep replacing them. At least the smell is now growing on me.
