Steve walks down the halls of the hospital. I stay back but close enough for him to know he isn't alone. I lean against the wall with my arms crossed just under my chest. I look down at his feet.
"I don't want to talk, Riley." He whispers, anger and confusion adjusts his tone.
"That's fine. We don't have to talk." I push myself off the wall and just take a step at a time. "Remember when Loki had both Barton and I under his spell?" This causes Steve to look at me like I have five heads. "Loki tried to make me his wife or whatever?" Steve doesn't move. "Right. Anyway, it was hard speaking up about the things that happened. Barton had his head knocked on by Nat and doesn't fully remember what happened during it. I was pulled out a different way. You pulled me out. When I didn't want to talk about what happened, you just sat there with me. You didn't push. You just made sure I didn't feel alone."
"Is that what you're doing?"
"I got to have my brother's back, right?"
"Well, I did make sure you didn't have to marry Loki or be kept locked up for..." Steve voice wavers before disappearing altogether.
"Personal usage?" I finish, making Steve shudder at the thought. "You helped me. Let me help you. I can just sit here while you internally argue with yourself. I can sit here quietly listening while you talk things out. I can sit here and have a conversation about what happened today and whatever else I don't know. I am here for what you need." Steve takes a deep breath as his shaky hand takes ahold of mine.
"That guy...that was Bucky."
"And you are sure it's him? I mean, shouldn't he be dead, or old at least?"
"I know it sounds impossible, Riley--" His voice aggravated.
"Ha! Steve, you were born in the early 1900s and fought during the war in the 40s, survived being frozen and are sitting here with me now. We fought with and against Norse Gods, one that tried to make me his bitch. I kind of stopped believing in impossible."
"Til the end of the line...." he mumbles.
"What?"
"What we used to say to let the other know we'd always be there." Steve lets out a sigh that came deep from his lungs. The sigh carried all the guilt and pain he felt. "I let him down."
"Alright." I rise to my feet. "Let's go." I start to walk off.
"What?"
"Let's go." I reply, pointing to the doors.
"Stop. You need to rest."
"Nah, I'm good. Come on." I take his hand and pull him up to his feet.
"Where?"
"To find and save your friend...? I thought that was obvious?" I walk out the door.
"How are we going to do that?" Steve calls after me.
"Riley, how are we going to find this guy?" Nat asks. "You expect us to just walk out to an over populated area and he just be there?""Nat! Listen, metal man works for who?"
"Hydra," she answers as we through the park.
"Exactly. And who does Hydra hate the most...at least at the moment?"
"Avengers. Okay, so expect them anywhere and everywhere."
"Or to cause some sort of devastation that would catch our attention." I look over my shoulder. "Take the uniform behind us." I say pointing out the agent-looking jerk pretending to feed the birds. "He has been following us for thirty minutes, phone to ear every ten."
"Looks like one of Hydra's men." Steve agrees over comms. "I got one tailing me as well." A grunt is heard.
"Steve? You good?"
"It's Bucky! He's here! I'm headed after him! You to just do your part!" Nat and I work to make our way into the building with Pierce.
"Sam, you got eyes on Steve?" Nat asks.
"Naw, but I see Pierce and that Rumlow dude walking in."
"Nat, you're on Pierce. I've got Rumlow." We separate. Nat steps into the restroom to change. I remain myself and pretend I am unaware of who the really enemy is. Feign stupidity. I see Rumlow and a group of...men... step into the elevator. I make a quick dash and slide in. "Gentleman. Rumlow."
"Miss me, beautiful?" He grins. I internally shudder remembering the last time we were this close, he had me pushed up against the wall kneeing my legs apart.
"Oh, Rumlow. How low we go."
"Why don't you come stand next to me? I'll make sure these mean friends of mine keep their hands off of you."
"I'm good. I can take care of myself." Rumlow glares at me from the corner of his eyes. I can actually feel them wondering up and down my body. The tension in the elevator is stagnant. Pure stuffy, old smelling air as if the elevator hadn't been opened in years. The hair on the back of my neck start to stand up. The doors open and the fresh air hits my face. I watch as each Hydra agent walk out, all but one.
"Looks like it's just you and me, Stark. If you wanted me alone, you could have just told me." I feel his hand on the small of my back.
"Guys, I lost Steve. I am doubling back to be ready for you two." Sam calls through the comms. My head is on Steve and if he was okay. I forgot I was alone with this evil being. That is until Rumlow's hand introduces itself to my ass. On instinct, I turn and slap him. A chuckle leaves his throat before reaching out with his hand that finds itself around my throat. I kick him in the knee followed by an elbow to his face. A sudden pain to my face as I fell to the ground. Blood coming from my nose.
"Even sexier with some blood, babe." Rumlow laughs. "My pants are getting tighter."
"Let me fix that for ya!" I punch him hard and fast between the legs.
"Fuck! You bitch!" I see out the window of the elevator that Sam was just below us and if I got a good running start, I might be able to jump and grab the running boards of the helicopter. I kick Rumlow in the face and make a mad dash, only...I didn't make it. Rumlow has grabbed my legs, my face going through the glass. In a daze, I feel myself being pulled by my legs from the elevator.
"Riley? Riley, where are you?" I hear Sam call. "Anyone see Riley?"
"No. I'm headed back in!" Nat replies.
"I got her." I hear in Steve's voice. "Just get Bucky out of here." My body comes to a stop. A hand grabs my hair close to my head causing me to scream. "Rumlow! Let her go!"
"Yeah.. I don't think so, Captain." While one hand remains grasped in my hair, his other lightly grabs my throat before slowly running down my body. "Isn't she a pretty little thing. She needs a little more corruption in her life. She's a bit innocent." He leans into my ear. "Would you like that? A man to make you his little whore. Call me daddy, baby." He growls in my ear before he let's go of me. Steve reaches me and helps me up. Nat has him in a chokehold. She nods to Steve who throws his shield just as Nat dodges. As soon as the shield is back on his arm he carries me out to the helicopter.
"Just sleep, Riley. I got you." He holds me close to his chest.
"Sleep. I like sleep." I mumble before the darkness consumes me.
