I'm dying...

At least I feel like I am.

The Florida heat is relentless today. Sweat coats my skin, causing any clothing to be unbearable to wear as it clings to my body. My hair is in a bun situated on top my head, but a few flyaways manage to escape the hair tie and stick to my shoulders.

"Ew," I whine, thankful I brought some toiletries for the mini shower I'll have to take in the sink of the girl's locker room.

I'm tucked besides the bleachers. The structure not only provides shade from the blinding sun, but also hides me from Coach Carter and his incessant whistle blowing.

Trevor is on the field ducking and weaving between the opposing team during a game of flag football. Coach emphasizes the importance of exercise during gym, and in his book that means you must be doing something at all times. But he's nice enough to meet you halfway.

You can do laps on the track or participate in the activity he had planned, and as Trevor always chooses the latter while I choose the former, I barely have a chance to interact with the only friend I have in this class.

I watch Trevor catch the ball as someone blocks my view.

"You look like you need this." She offers a cup, wiggling it more frantically as I stare at the hand mere inches from my face.

"It's water," she sighs.

"What'd you do to it?" I mumble before looking into the eyes of Macey Abrams. "If this is another one of Bella's pranks then-"

"Oh, please," she scoffs. "I don't get my hands dirty for anyone." She places a hand on her hip and readjusts her stance before wiggling the cup more aggressively. It's then that I see the old Macey Abrams I'm so used to brewing beneath the surface.

I take the cup, eyeing it's contents wearily before saying, "Thanks." I don't know how thirsty I am until the cold water hits my tongue and the cup is emptied in a blink.

Instead of walking away, Macey takes a seat next to me. I look around frantically, figuring there's got to be someone recording and the gotcha! moment will come any second now...but it doesn't.

"Sorry for what Bella did during lunch a few weeks ago. She can be a bit of a bitch sometimes, but I swear she's sweet if you get passed that."

"I bet. Nothing says sweet like turning half the school against me. Why are you here? Why are you being nice to me?"

She bristles a bit and licks her lips, opening and closing her mouth before sighing frustratingly. It's like owning up to her bullshit is painful.

I want to laugh, but press my lips together after remembering I'm dealing with a ticking time bomb.

"Look...it's not easy, ya know? The whole apologizing thing. I'm not use to it."

I don't doubt that. "Then why are you? It's not like you're the one who told that guy to trip me."

"Because Bella won't," she deadpans. "And I've done my fair share, too."
