I walk down the path leading to Ashton's house, taking short and patient strides to the front door. It felt as if I was in my own little bubble, surrounded by an air of confidence as I now knew what I wanted. After today, I would have no regrets. My next move was not dependent on what this paternity test would reveal. My mind was made up and there was no turning back. Usually, this would terrify me. But today, that emotion was nowhere inside of me.
I took my first step up as the door swung open to reveal a smirking Sabrina.
"Sabrina, hi," I chirped and smiled politely at her. She was taken aback by my positive attitude, her smirk faltering a bit. Last time she saw me, I was a mess in this very front yard, worried about the future of my relationship. Not shocking that I caught her off guard.
"Peyton, it's so nice to see you again," she said sarcastically and with a smile of her own.
"You can cut the 'nice girl' act because I know you don't like me. And I don't like you either. So let's not pretend and just get this over with." Without waiting for an invitation, I stepped beside her and into the familiar house.
She shut the door and turned around, her fake smile now replaced by a glare.
"Ooh, someone put on their big girl panties this morning. About time," she said while crossing her arms.
I didn't know how far along in her pregnancy she was, but I could see a slight bump forming on her stomach. It wasn't even half the size as mom's.
Her stare was practically hypnotizing. Those brown eyes swirled with so much hate towards me. There's no telling what she'll do if this baby did turn out to be Ashton's. No doubt she would mock and rub it in as long as I was in the picture. She seemed like the type of woman to do that.
"What are you going to do when he reads that paternity test and finds out that this kid is his? Sure, you'll try to make your relationship work but it won't last long. Not with me around. We've known each other for a long time and he's always came back for more." She concluded her little rant with her signature smirk and raised her eyebrow, daring me to make the next move.
"It's honestly sad that you can't put the pieces together," I started. "He always came back to you because he was lost. He needed a distraction-"
"He loved me!" she shouted.
"Loved. Past tense. He's moved on and maybe you should too." I kept my tone calm, refusing to let her get to me. "How do you even know that baby is his? Have you been with anyone else since him?" I asked.
She drops her gaze to the floor, clenching her teeth and taking a deep, shaky breath.
Bingo.
"I guess I have my answer." It was my turn to smirk.
She snaps her gaze to me once more, her face was reddening. I wouldn't be surprised if she was actually planning my murder in her head.
"Bitch," she spat out. That word was laced with so much venom and hatred. I almost flinched.
Suddenly, footsteps could be heard coming down the steps. And down came Ashton, holding a white envelope in his hands. Relief washed through me as his bright blue eyes met mine in concern.
