I pulled the black dress over my head and let it fall to just above my knees. The fabric was loose, but I was still able to show off my curves.
Ashton had gotten the dress as a gift after the Bella incident. Every time I met her gaze in school, I expected an apology or even to see the slightest bit of regret in her eyes. Except every time I look, she sends me that taunting smirk like she's just begging me to confront her. And believe me, I've thought of many different ways to hurt her and her reputation that she seems to cherish so much. But every time I was talked out of it by Ashton; always there to remind me that I was better than that. While I told him the blame was on her, he had insisted to buy me this dress and take me on a real date.
No tree climbing.
No alcohol.
No wild parties.
Everything was set and nothing could ruin our night.
It was gonna be a night to remember.
"Knock knock."
I looked into the mirror, past my reflection to see mom leaning on the doorframe. Her lips turned up in a soft smile and a hand on her belly.
"Plans for tonight?" she asked.
"Ashton is taking me to a fancy dinner at some restaurant. He refuses to tell me. It's supposed to be a surprise."
"Really? That seems a little boring."
If only you knew. Our relationship is nothing close to boring.
I chuckled, knowing mom is never one to keep her thoughts to herself. "I'm actually really excited. This is going to be our first official date so hope for the best."
"Hope for the best? Are you expecting something to go wrong?"
"It always does," I mumbled. My hopeful determination seemed to diminish with every second passing by.
"What was that?"
"Nothing." I quickly scanned the room in order to find a distraction, my gaze landing on her belly. "The baby's almost here. Just two more months. Did you finish ordering the furniture?"
"Yes!" Her tone brightened, brown eyes glistening with excitement. "We picked out everything from a crib to a changing table. They should be shipped here by next week and Calvin will start putting everything together...honey, you're okay with all this?"
"Of course I am! I mean, even if I wasn't there isn't much I could do now."
I've thought about this since the night I met Calvin. Soon, he will move in with us and there will also be a little baby. With the thought of expanding this family came with the powerful feeling of joy. It was going to be a change.
A good change.
But the last major change that happened in my life was a loss. I can only hope that this change won't end up being a failure.
"Well, another thing is we need to create the nursery in Jacob's old room. The room next to mine is too small. We'll start moving his things out soon."
