Prom was this Saturday, and Adalia still didn't have a date.
She closed her locker with a harsh bang and leaned against it, breathing deeply and slow. She crossed her arms with her books against her chest and wondered why.
"Ah-hem." Adalia jumped.
Her gaze landed on a boy. A tall, handsome boy she's known since the start of high school.
Caden.
"Sorry to interrupt your daydreaming, but you're on my locker," Caden said. She only blinked in response.
"You alright?" he asked. Her eyes met his. The contact made her uncomfortable.
Without saying a word, Adalia stepped aside. The boy grinned.
Adalia looked away from his face.
She could hear the sound of his fingertips move the lock in a mix of directions. The noise bothered her.
Adalia stepped away from the wall of lockers and walked to her first class of the day, leaving the worries of prom and the cute boy behind her.

Adalia tried her best to ignore the sad boy in the corner of the school library as she searched for a book.
The task was difficult.
Subconsciously, she would find herself staring.
Staring at the light, blonde hair that fell over his face, hiding his eyes. Contemplating the way his fingers trembled.
The sad boy would run his fingers through his hair. Then, he would pat his own head, attempting to fix it. It was a short cycle, but Adalia found it captivating.
She gave up searching for the right book. The boy had her full attention, and he had no clue.
The loose, silver chain dangling along his left leg didn't go unnoticed. Adalia has only ever seen a small group of teenage boys, at school, wear those.
The sad boy suddenly stood up. The abruptness made Adalia jump. The heaviness with each step he took only pulled Adalia in more.
It worried her.
She left the library soon after.

When Adalia met Caden, she grew a strong liking to him. She didn't like him. She appreciated his horrible jokes every morning the past three years. Just, not today.
Caden was digging through his locker when Adalia rounded the corner.
All you need is the chemistry book. He won't might not even acknowledge me, she thought.
She was wrong.
She quickly walked to her locker and, just as quickly, spun the dial. Slighlty pausing on the correct numbers. First try, she was in.
"Adalia," Caden said.
She nearly threw her Math textbook into the tiny cave with full force.
"Adalia," he said, again.
Her English journal slipped out of her grip, through her hands, and onto the floor. She mumbled a curse before bending down to retrieve the notebook.
