CHAPTER XX: slow dancing in the dark
so as you can see, the chapter's main meaning and symbolism is inspired by the song slow dancing in the dark by joji. however, there is some more symbolism behind the song besides the obvious foreshadowing of king's feelings as stated in the chapter itself:

this song in particular is unique because the lyrics and song's intentional feelings foreshadow king's emotions and frustrations that he goes through later on in the story.

this foreshadows king's grieving over y/n. he becomes frustrated with the fact that not only did you off yourself so soon, but he's on and off with the fact that it may have been his fault that you died. he could've prevented it. but he also questions whether you took his love for granted and ended up not realizing how much he loves you.

besides this flip flop, some additional foreshadow that comes with this song is feelings of frustration and contemplation that comes along after death. we see this with ghostbur in the dsmp lore as some ghosts usually lose their memories and often times try to go back to the people they have made memories with as a way to grasp onto life while they're dead. especially in the chorus of the song that has the popular line: "give me reasons we should be complete" is a way of expressing internalized pain and contemplating whether ones life was actually worth it.

the metaphor of slow dancing in the dark not only depicts a situation of one-sided love, but it can also depict trying to hold onto good memories, trying to make death feel peaceful rather than incomplete, which is definitely foreshadowing ghostbur's situation or possibly ghostking's situation (haha if you read a second time, you'll know king's situation is a tiny bit different but nevertheless, still had to go through limbo like any ghost).

overall, these metaphors in the broader perspective represent unhealthy indulgence within certain subjects.

CHAPTER XXII: acceptance in checkmate
i don't know if this was easy to catch but the theme of this chapter is grievance (obviously foreshadowing the inevitable) in comparison to king's yandere ways coming about. the last stage of grief is acceptance. by saying that this stage is in checkmate, it means king is stuck (haha puns for days). once he heard y/n talk about the future in a bad light, he didn't know how to truly feel from there. yeah he had you back but that one line from you hit different.
