“Hmm?”
“You alright there?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“Because. When I said I love you, you looked like a hurt puppy.”
“I did?"
“Yeah. Why?”
“I….I guess it’s just still surprising to me. You know, to know that someone actually loves me. I don’t it’s weird.”
“Karkles.”
“That’s not my name.”
“What? No ‘asshole’, or ‘jackass’ after that? Where did my Karkat go? Who are you?”
“Shut the fuck up Dave. I’m still here. Just that I’m too in shock to worry about name calling right now.”
Oh. I think I broke Karkat. I sighed and pulled him into a hug. Why does he have to be so difficult?
Well. I guess I’d have issues with trusting others too after that happened. Especially since I was sort of part of it.
Does this mean he doesn’t trust me?
“Dave? Can I trust you?” What the fuck? Can he read my mind or something?
“Of course you can. Why wouldn’t you be able to?” Does he remember?
“Because...last year. You….I don’t know Dave. I just don’t know.” Of course he remembers. God dammit.
"Dude. That was last year. A lot happened since then, ok? We’re past that.”
“Yeah. I guess.”
Fuck. I really hope that doesn’t get in the way. I wasn’t lying when I said a lot has changed since then. At least for me. Her, I’m not sure. She did run off to be with him, but she might still like Karkles. I don’t know anymore.
“Dave.”
“Kitkat?”
“Really? Whatever. You ruined the moment with that, so nevermind.”
“Aw, come on Karkat. What did you want?”
“Promise you won’t ruin the mood? This time?”
“Promise.” He picked up his head, looked at me and smiled.
Smiled. A real, genuine smile.
The world may end right now, but I’d be ok with that.
“Dave.”
“Karkat.”
“I can trust you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“What made you stop doubting?”
“I was thinking.”
“About what?”
“About how much I actually love you.”
“What?”
“Dave, I love you.” I smiled.
“I love you too, Kitkat.”
Nothing can go wrong now. Nothing. This is too perfect to end.
