Waking up on the wrong side of the bed is what my life's about now, I rolled over and smacked the top of my alarm clock. I didn't want to get up, especially since I stayed up until 2 am, working. I stared up at the boring white ceiling, until Delilah ( My best friend and flatmate ) busted into my bedroom. " Come on Mel, Look the sun's awake " she stated as she opened the curtains, sunlight flooded into my room. I grabbed one of my pillows and pressed it into my face, " Tell the sun to go back to sleep " I growled. She picked the pillow up off my face and sighed, " Come on, it's nearly 5:30 am " she stated. I rolled my eyes, " Why do we have jobs that start so early? " I asked. " Because we're passionate about our lines of work, like you solve murder cases with your dreamy and hunky partner, and I write about it in the local paper " she smirked. I let out a dry chuckle, " Please Del, don't talk about Ashton that way, especially when you're dating my brother. He and Ash are best friends, remember? " I smirked. She rolled her eyes, " Oh, shut it. You know I love Logan " she smiled. ( I've got 4 brothers. Chase and Cole who are twins, their 2 years older than me. Logan is a year older than me. Frankie who is about 9 years old, my parents adopted him when he was a baby ). I nodded, " I need to get up, but I don't want too " I smiled. She rolled her eyes again, before walking out of my room. I stood up and walked over to my wardrobe, picking out one of my many pant suits. I grabbed my badge and my gun, placing it on my hip. I then walked into the kitchen, " Are you ever gonna read the new article, I wrote? " Delilah asked me. I shrugged " I'm working the case Del, I don't need to read it ", she sighed " You mean you're obsessed with the case. You stay up till all hours of the night, reading about those psycho's, what's so different about this case because I've never seen you like this ". I thought for a second, " You know Del, sometimes I don't have a clue what you're saying. This whole, you being Australian and I being American barrier isn't working " I joked. She rolled her eyes, " Well, your brother has no problem understanding me " she smirked. " Puke... Gotta go, see you later Del " I sighed shaking my head, I left her chuckling in the kitchen.
I sat at my desk, tapping my foot and looking over the case files for the hundredth time. A cup of coffee was set down in front of me, I smiled up at Ashton, who was wearing an identical smile. " 4 sugars, no milk? " I asked, he nodded. I bit the inside of my cheek, " You only bring me coffee when... " I started. " Another body's been found, we've been called to the crime scene " he sighed as he rubbed the back of his neck, I took a deep breath and then stood up. " Alright, let's get going " I stated picking up my phone and coffee, then I followed him out the door. I climbed into Ashton's truck and took a sip of my coffee, " So, details? " I asked. " Middle aged guy, he was found by a group of teenagers walking to school. He was beaten really bad, he's unrecognizable " Ashton sighed, I nodded. " So, they can't tell who he is? " I questioned, Ashton nodded. " His fingertips were also sliced off " Ash stated, " That's a first " I mumbled taking another sip of my coffee. When we pulled up to the scene, there were police and other detectives everywhere. I stepped out of Ashton's truck and let out a deep sigh as we walked over to the chief. " Detective Irwin, come look at the crime scene with me. Detective Rae, please go talk to the kids that found the body, I think they're hiding something " the chief directed, I gave a single nod, before walking over to the group of teens ( I've been working with the same people for almost 3 years, yet no one takes me serious as a detective ). " Hello. I'm detective Rae. I just have a few questions for you, if that's alright " I smiled at the clearly shaken teenagers, one boy nodded. " You're American? " he asked, I nodded. " Listen we already told the police everything " he panicked, I sighed. " I know, but something doesn't seem right. You say you were on your way to school, but the school is in the opposite direction, so Where were you going? " I asked with my serious face on ( I tend to know when someone is lying to me, I've always been able to tell ), they looked at each other nervously. " We didn't mean to ditch class, don't take us to jail! " one of the girls in the group shouted, I smiled " Don't worry, nobody's going to jail, I just need the truth ". They nodded, and told me the whole story.
