Chapter 3
I was running around a tree, in a white princess dress. Being ten years younger I hadn’t a care in the world. The most that I feared was scraping my knee. I was innocence personified. I thought my life was perfect: The perfect parents, the perfect brothers, the perfect house, the perfect best friend.
I heard a rustle in the bushes ahead of me, and stopped running. My breath was short from on the maniacal running. A infectious grin spread across my face as I saw my best friend walking towards me with a lazy smile on his face. He was my favorite person in the world. No one used to like him back then; they used to call him a freak, because of his purple eyes. But I saw through all that, I wouldn’t have cared if his eyes were blood red… he was the most beautiful seven-year-old in the world to me.
“Aphrodite! Aphrodite!” I waved at him jovially, feeling the automatic pull urge me towards him. I skipped towards him and wrapped my arms around his waist tightly. He hugged me back with just as much conviction, and planted a sloppy kiss on my forehead.
“Gross! Romeo cooties,” I disgustedly cried, wiping the place roughly where he had kissed me.
He giggled childishly and planted another kiss on my cheek, “Love you Aph.”
“Love you too fatty,” I exclaimed poking him in the stomach, “Last one to the tree house is a rotten egg!” I yelled, before running towards the tree house, and he followed suit with a determined look on his face.
I always used to take a head start not that it ever helped me beat him. Romeo always used to win and he never let me win either. At elementary school, I was the best in my class… I used to run faster than some of the older kids, but with Romeo, I always lost… Always.

Romeo was never in my school, he told me that he went to a special school. When I asked him what he meant by special, he just used to change the subject. I never used to doubt him. I trusted him fully and completely, as all children do.
Our friendship was never corrupted by the world we didn’t fully understand, we were blinded by our innocence. But that’s what made us so unbreakable.
We met two summers before that. It was the first time that I went into the woods alone. Well, got lost in there alone. I was curious, the forest never frightened me, and it just intrigued me. I thought that it was full of angels and fairies, and more beautiful creatures. So, one day, I just went, just strolled into the woods while my parents were asleep, and Benji still at school. I was prancing around the tall trees, the sun rays passed through the branches of leaves like laser beams.
It was like a secret garden, my secret garden, the pathway was so visible, and I just followed its twists and turns, stopping here and there to smell a flower, or graze my tiny hand across the bark of a tree. The wind whisked through my hair, making it dance and tangle. Beyond the pathway was dense grass, something that I knew that it would be dangerous to dwell in, it looked dark an eerie, and I knew that I wouldn’t have been able to find my way back home if I ever thought to stray off the path.
The density of the trees was decreasing, and the pathway was becoming wider and distinct. I reached a clearing. It was breath taking. There was a wide waterfall streaming down the side of a cliff that was a couple meters high, the stream that it made looked so clear, and welcoming that I just wanted to jump into it.
I was just about to run, tuck and jump into the water, when I heard a rustling above, and before I could do anything about it, someone fell on top of me.
OMPH!
“Hey! What are you doing in my secret place?” The thing on top of me spoke.
“Your place, I just was walking here. I can go anywhere I want to. Now get off of me!” I replied trying to push the creature off of me. It was so heavy.
“You shouldn’t have been there when I fell. It’s your fault.” It stated as he got off of me, and I saw a boy, with slightly chubby cheeks. He stood up, dusting off his trousers.
“My fault?!” I exclaimed incredulously, “you’re the one that shouldn’t be climbing trees, and dropping on top of innocent girls!”
I followed suit, and stood up smoothing down my dress.
“I hardly think you’re innocent. You shouldn’t be walking alone in here. Shouldn’t you be with your Mother or something?”
“I’ve lived here all my life. I think I can handle going into the woods alone.”
“All you’re life- how old are you? Four?”
“I’m five and a half- excuse me! I’m turning six in October! Like that’s any of your business anyway.”
“Whatever. You look like you’re four. What’s your name?”
“That’s none of your bees wax.” I retorted sniffly.
He sighed a little and smiled at me, “my name’s Romeo.”
I pursed my lips, not meeting his eyes, and replied after a few moments of hesitation, “Aphrodite.”
“That’s a pretty name.” He stated, looking serious, but serene.
I smiled at him shyly, for the first time meeting his eyes- I tilted my head slightly, “Your eyes… they’re purple.”
He grinned at me childishly, “That’s because I’m special. God gave me royal eyes.”
It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
