I smiled at the transistor radio on the table next to John as Jane and Paul discussed their brand new engagement.
"Can't believe he actually went through with it," John mused. "I always thought he'd chicken out."
"He has been saying he wants to marry her for quite a few years now, hasn't he?" I rolled my eyes. "Took him long enough." I reached down instinctively to fiddle around with my wedding ring, but once again, I found that it was gone. I still wasn't used to it being gone. I hid the gesture by wiping the palms of my hands on my jeans and turning away from John to face the opposite direction.
We were in the middle of setting up the Christmas tree in the living room of Kenwood. John had told me that he wanted to spend Christmas here this year and that Mimi agreed to come and stay for a few days too. I had been reluctant initially since the place looked like the site of a bombing, but he had cleaned since then...either that or he had hired someone to clean for him. Probably the latter. I would be surprised if he even knew how to clean on his own.
Julian was upstairs napping, and we were downstairs struggling so that we could decorate the tree with him when he came back down.
"Hey, John?" I asked as I turned back around.
"Yeah?" he asked.
"Whatever happened to Yoko?" I asked quietly. John shifted uncomfortably as he struggled to put the top of our Christmas tree on the stand going through the middle of all the branches.
"Talked to her just a few days ago. She's pissed, Alissa. Is it bad that I'm actually scared of her?"
"Yeah, it is. You usually shouldn't have to be scared of people you're sleeping with." I frowned at him and he turned back to face me, frowning just as deeply as me.
"Not cool, Lissa."
I shrugged. "Just speaking the obvious truth!"
He rolled his eyes. "You piss me off sometimes."
"Oh, John, I don't think that I piss you off nearly as much as you piss me off."
"I dunno, you piss me off quite a bit," he said.
I rolled my eyes. "Put the top of that tree on before I slap ye, John."
"So dramatic," he said. "Didn't miss that about ye."
"You mean that that's not a turn-on?" I asked, feigning shock. "Thought that and my tits were the things you liked best about me."
"Wow, you're so funny," he said with another eye roll, securing the top of the tree on the stand. "Yer tits are much better than you constantly abusin' me. No debate."
