Felix's POV
I stood before an eclectic, exotic garden that swept into a rugged landscape, tumbling into the azure mediterranean sea. From where I stood, everything looked like a page torn from a medieval story.
Narrow winding pathways were the only way to move about this sleepy little, stone-clad, mountain top village.
The Village of Eze, Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur.
It had been Mia's dream to visit this slice of heaven. She didn't expect in her wildest dreams that I would arrange for us to get married here. She should get used to me bending over backwards for her by now. One look from her when she was still a senior in high school, and I was a complete goner. Her smooth mocha skin, chestnut-brown curls, sparkling dark brown eyes that reminded me of whiskey through a thick-walled glass, her radiant and contagious smile, her confidence and no bullshit attitude...it got me. It got me good.
Shot to the heart, or however that song went.
Mia is everything I have ever wanted but never knew I needed, and today I get to become her husband. I get to call her my wife.
"Oi, you done wanking out here?" Hero called out as he came up the steps and into view. "Why the hell would I need to wank. I'm getting married today to ensure I never have to wank again!" I grinned at him. I knew he was just being a complete ass, which he's really good at, but I could see how happy he was for me. "Oh, I know you don't need to wank. Just thought you might want to prime the pump before its big performance tonight." He chuckled and handed me the cufflinks I thought I had misplaced. "No need, the pump works just fine, mate!" I clapped him on the shoulder and immediately apologized.
It had been two months since he was shot there. He'd healed up nicely and swore to me he wasn't in pain, but I still felt like a jerk anytime I smacked his shoulder. I couldn't help it. We'd always done it, and the habit had become worse since we played footie with Brent back in our uni days. The police had collected statements from both Hero and Josephine, and there had been a very stressful investigation into the deaths of James and Jack Cooper.
As the investigation continued, Hero and Mercy worried about Josephine's condition and stress levels, and the police kept probing for more info. Eventually, Jack's fingerprints were matched to the gun used to shoot James. Jack's own gun was matched to the bullet retrieved from Hero's shoulder, and Jack himself was found crushed and unrecognizable under the mangled steel of the racks. DNA testing proved it was indeed Jack Cooper's body that had been found.
As soon as Hero and Josephine flew back to L.A., they went into work mode, transitioning the company as they had planned. Josephine took on her role as maid of honour despite Mia insisting she takes it easy. Jo had insisted she needed to have a project that could take the edge off her stress levels. Girls always surprised me. Instead of relaxing when they are stressed, they take on a passion project to divert their focus. I'll never understand it!
Witnessing piglet go through pregnancy and become a mother to Ava had been eye-opening. Josephine navigating a criminal investigation, spearheading the business transition and growing it in value, taking on the maid of honour duties and balancing it all with her evolving pregnancy has been awe-inspiring to watch. I can't wait for Mia and me to begin our family. Having a little replica of her terrorizing the house fills my heart with a kind of love that seems boundless.
"You ready? It's almost time. If you need a quick getaway, we can hop over that wall, climb down the rocks and get on a Yacht down at the marina. It would be the perfect James Bond style exit looking this spiffy and all." Leave it to Hero to poke fun at me.
I know he can tell I'm nervous, but it's a good kind of nervous.
"Easy 007! I'm here by choice, and I'm not leaving this terrace until after the ceremony is complete. I just need to work on keeping my shit together when I see her dressed in white and walking up to stand beside me." I shake my head, trying to calm my heart from beating out of my chest.
