As we reach our ship my master passes me the child before sitting at the controls. This gives me a chance to finally look close at him.
He has deep brown eyes that he uses to explore the new surroundings and big pointy ears that move as he changes emotions. His skin his green with tiny hair all over, he even has wrinkles despite the fact that he is a baby. I've never seen one like him.

As he was reading my mind Luke asked me "Isn't he unique?" I nod "The only one I knew that looked like him was my master"
"Master Yoda?"
"That's the one"
R2 beeps to tell us that he is ready to go, and the ship starts moving. I turn my attention back to the kid.

He is so cute in his robe as he looks at me like he's scanning my face.
"Hi little one, my name is Kaira Satri, I'm a Jedi as you probably know. What is your name?" I ask him to see if he knows a few words, but the only thing he does is cooing
I smile "It's ok, we'll learn how to understand each other"

Holding him with my arm I reach my pocket with my free hand to grab my lucky charm. It's a red ball of a size small enough to allow me to squeeze in my hand. I play with it every time i have nothing to do. It's a gift from my family before I left them to become a Jedi, apparently it was my favorite toy when I was little. As soon as the tiny object is out of my pocket I hear a coo, so I look down to see the kid trying to reach the ball.

"You like it buddy?" I say getting it close to him "You can see it, but then I want it back, don't eat it"
He grabs it and keeps it in his tiny hands, he doesn't look happy but a bit sad.

I turn him to look at him in the eyes
"Is it all right? What's going on?"
He whines
I'm interrupted by Luke "Use the force Kaira, you can't understand him through words, maybe you can with his mind. Concentrate"

I focus on the kid's eyes, trying to read his mind. A memory comes up.

The ship was traveling in hyperspace, in the front seat there was the Mandalorian, focused on the controls. The gaze moved to a lever formed by a metal stick and a sphere on top of it.
The Mandalorian turned to look at the kid then raised his hand to the lever, taking off the ball
"I told you that was a bad idea"
There are not other informations that can make me understand what "that" is
Then he gave the ball to the kid before turning back to the ship controls

The memory switches to another

The kid held the ball in his hands, focusing all of his attention to it. The Mandalorian looked at him.
"Grogu" he said after a few seconds, like he was trying to give a sense to the word.
The kid's ears went up as he looked at the Mandalorian, who chuckled.
The kid cooed and lowered his ears turning back to the ball.
"Grogu" repeated the man, this time more convincing, and the kid looked again at him cooing.
The Mandalorian sighed happy.

I realise Grogu is the kid's name

"Give me the ball" the child refused, uncertain, causing his mentor to repeat "Grogu, give me the ball"
This time the kid handed him the precious ball.
The Mandalorian held the object with two fingers
"Okay, here we go. You can have it, just like before"
The child looked at him
"Grogu, come on. You can have it. Come on"
The little one closed his eyes and got the ball using the force, with the man's reacting happily
"Dank farrik!" he exclaimed clapping his hands.
The kis got scared for a second at the words spoken
"Hey no, I'm not mad at you, you did good" he reassured him probably smiling behind his helmet.

The memory fades away.

I look at the youngling. Well, this is worth a try
"Grogu" I call him, he raises his head.

I'm a genius.

I remember then that the kid was sad, and I connected the dots.
I look at my ball, so similar to the one he got from the Mandalorian. That ball triggered his reaction, breaking his curiosity on the insidebof the ship and making him think about the man who must be his father.

"Hey, don't be sad, you'll see him again"
Grogu seems to understand what I just said and gets closer to me to be reassured.

I let him stay and look outside
"Good job Kaira" says Luke
"Thank you for the tip, Master"
He nods as I look back at Grogu who is now asleep
"Tough day, huh kid?"

He sleeps through all the trip to the planet where my master has his Jedi temple. Once there I wake up the child.
"Kaira, guide Grogu to where he will live, show him around then let him rest. Tomorrow he will start training"
"On it, master"

I walk out slowly, followed by the kid, as Luke and R2-D2 go in the opposite direction.
The kid waddles behind me until we reach my place. In the room right next to mine I set a bed for the child and I show it to him.
I give him some soup so he can eat.
He slurps it hungrily.
"If you need anything at all I'm right here next to you, okay? I will let you sleep, so tomorrow you'll be ready to work with me and my Master. If you wake up don't get far, come get me first"
I help him on the hammock then I leave the room headed to eat with Luke and then to sleep.

*The day after*

I wake up hearing tiny steps closer to me, I open my eyes to see Grogu approaching me
"Good morning kid, did you sleep well?"
He looks at me, he seems well rested.
"So... Do you want to eat something?"
He raises his arms to be picked up with an excited look.
I chuckle and take him in my arms as I start going to get some food.

After he has eaten we go looking for Luke, not far from here.
"Master, the Child is ready"
"Good, let's begin. Kaira watch what I do, from tomorrow his master will be you"
My eyes go wide
"Thank you, Master"
"You've been a good Padawan" he says smiling.
