Izuku, with his stomach full and no longer a viable distraction, realised that he could no longer put off this heavy conversation. He inhaled deeply, breath hitching once or twice.
Suki, sensing his mounting worry, rubbed soothingly on his arm and exaggerated her slowed breathing, "You don't actually have to do this now."
"I gotta do it now, or I don't think I'll be able to. I'll be fine," he reassured, finally looking her in the eyes and she searched them for a lie.
They were sitting parallel on one blanket while he shared another over his shoulders with Suki, both leaning back against a tree a ways off from anyone else.
They nursed the hot drinks Suki had made. It was warmed milk sweetened with honey and flavoured with some spice Izuku didn't recognise but was comforting all the same.
"So," Suki said finally, "where do you wanna start?"
"Uuuuhhh," Izuku blinked a few times, trying to work out what she needed to know. "If I say I'm quirkless, does that mean anything to you?"
"Not really, sounds normal or boring... not quirky?" she tried.
Okay. He nodded firmly, understanding where she was coming from. The original pre-quirk definition of quirk or quirky meant unique or different, so it wasn't that much of an odd thought process and technically she wasn't wrong. He quickly realised that he'd have to start from the very beginning.
"Okay, I guess I'm starting 200 years ago in my world."
"Why that far back?"
"You'll see. So, 200 years ago a baby was born with the ability to glow."
Suki raised an eyebrow at that, she must have found that weird but seemed to be going with it.
"That baby was the first human with a quirk, like a superpower, they used to be called meta-abilities but they're called quirks now, you either have it from birth or it manifests at about four years old. That's an exciting time for small kids, and stressful for parents. I tried for hours to summon objects or breathe fire like my parents. More and more people had quirks as time went on, because it's the next stage of human evolution, along with more streamlined bodies, so these more evolved people have one less toe joint and they now make up 80% of the world's population. And quirks can be all sorts of things; like there's what's called mutant quirks which are permanent alterations to people's bodies, like Hawks who is ranked the #3 pro-hero and he has wings and can fly and individually control his feathers even if they're not attached, it's so cool. Like- like he can pick things up and feel vibrations with a feather he's detached, and he can make them sharp too so they're good for combat. Mutation quirks like his wings are generally from birth. Then there's transformation quirks, like Ryuko; she can transform into a dragon; she's so awesome!"
Suki seemed a little shocked at this, "The dragons have been extinct here for over 20 years."
"We thought dragons never existed, they're mythical creatures."
"Then the last category is activation quirks, they're technically called emitter quirks, the #2 Pro-hero Endeavour can produce fire from his body, which quite destructive, combined with his temper means that he has some of the worst stats regarding civilian injury and property damage. A better example is Present Mic who can make his voice inhumanly loud when he activates his quirk, and he's super popular because he has a radio show, oh that's like a type of journalism or like public speaking? It's way too complicated to try to explain radio waves right now based on what era this seems to be."
