vii. it's getting dark and it's all too
quiet and I can't trust anyone now"WE'RE ALMOST THERE," ARKEN SAID as they walked through the night, Inej, Kaz and Aurora looking around at their surroundings. The only light was the fire torch that Arken was holding and the whole place creeper Aurora out, it was like something from her nightmares.
When she was younger, she was afraid of the dark, of the unknown that came with it. Even now, she always felt uncomfortable in the dark, like something was watching her every move.
"Where is Jesper?" She questioned as she looked around, worry plastered on her face.
"Just a little further," he said and Auroras eyes grew wide as she saw a sign for landmines.
"We'll wait," Kaz said as he saw the sign, she knew he was paranoid that he could be leading them to their death, "Follow the path that you carve,"
Arken sighed, "That sign, that was my idea to keep people away," he explained. But after what Kaz and Aurora saw earlier, she wasn't sure if they could trust him.
They followed after him and Aurora kept gazing at the fold, a chill running down her spine as she realised that it was really there.
"Its one thing hearing about it, but this is-" Inej started, staring at the fold with a mix between wonder and fear.
"-nothing compared to what lies within," Arken said, cutting her off.
"Oh great," Aurora said, looking down at the goat she was holding whilst Arken passed the torch over to Inej, approaching the fold.
The thunder rumbled within it and it felt kine a huge mist of darkness, as she watched it, she saw a huge box being pulled out by Arken onto a set of tracks.
"There," he gestured to the carriage, "goat, jurda, wheres the coal,"
"Wait for me!" A voice called out and they saw Jesper being chased down the sands by a group of men who were shooting at them.
"They can't see the train," a worried Arken said. Aurora looked at Kaz who wore an exasperated face, yelling for Jesper to hurry up.
He left the lantern, chasing after them as they board the carriage. Inej closed the door and sealed them into the death trap that was the carriage.
"Please tell me you have twenty pounds of alabaster coal," Arken said, setting things up.
"Slight snag in the plan, turns out the kid who was helping me but the coal didn't exactly know how to buy coal," he explained, placing the bag on the floor.
