Chapter 12-P.O.T.D

Chapter 12

“Last training?” Alexis asked when I stopped reminiscing. I flicked my eyelids wide so that I can stare at her. And she looked so beautiful that it hurts me. The light from the light bulbs above made the edge of her skin glows.

“Let me continue, my dear,” I said softly, closing my eyes again as I forced myself to return to my past. I saw her blushed before I carry on with my story or rather my own nightmares.

Last training? Why?, I wondered in my head as Hajibah turned his body to look at the mountain that was covered by thick tress. I knew that we will be training inside there, where wild animals as fierce as the king of the forest.

“By the end of tomorrow, all of you will no longer be a child. All of you will receive the promising mark but only one will be chosen to lead the force,” he whipped his head around and raked a serious glare at us, but his gaze stayed longer on Noah’s. No doubt, he trusted Noah to do a good job. “So, make me proud by hunting the biggest animal you can find in this mountain, we will celebrate tonight!”

“Master Hajibah, Aden is too young to get the mark!” Caleb protested before Hajibah could carry on speaking. Aden, the youngest among us, he was only nine years old and yet, he has muscles that didn’t belong to a nine years old boy.

Hajibah shot Caleb a dangerous look like he can kill him by staring at him. Caleb shifted uneasily under his look. “Caleb now is not the time to talk about young. Aden is capable of killing you right now,” he added hastily. I looked at Aden from the corner of my eyes and what I saw was only a boy. He still had those innocent eyes in his face. He have dimples when he smiled and his brown hair seemed to cover his forehead whenever wind blow through his back.

“Now, get your weapons and go!” Hajibah ordered as fierce as a lion. We ran to the center of the village and grabbed our own weapons. Mine was a dagger, as short as a new pencil; every night, I spent my time sharpen it so it can slice anything as thick as elephant’s leg in half. Noah has his staff. It may look ordinary but it was made from a type of material that was rare in this world. His father had found it and forged the weapon for him personally.

I wished my father was as understanding as his father. My father did not even tried to help me create a weapon, he just said,” go find any branch and craved it up,”

Fortunately, I was smart not to listen to him. I did not find a branch to carve up my weapon; instead I stole some ore from the blacksmith, Gil and forged my own weapon. That’s why it can slice something so thick in half.

Noah had already disappeared into the thick mountains, followed by Caleb and Kaden –one of Noah’s loyal dogs. He was as tall as Noah who was taller than me and had meaner expression. I gave my hut one last look before I followed the rest of them, with Aden behind me.

“Niklaus, want to team up?” Caleb’s sudden voice appeared behind me. I gripped my dagger roughly in my right hand, ready to strike at him if he pose any threat.

I shot him a curious look. Why would he want to team up when the rest of the villagers turn on me? They did not care what I do at all. They just continue doing their chores when my father beat the hell out of me in front of them. Caleb did not seem to be the kind that abandons those in need. I know, he was a good kid. But, his sudden move caught me off-guard and I was glad that someone did treat me like I was equal.

“Sure,” I said and relaxed my stance. “But why?”

He shrugged his bare shoulder. I could see a scar at his neck, a light scratch. That scar was nothing compared to my back and chest. “You know, hunting for the слон is like impossible!”
