subject: a little birdie told you
Of course, you came back to me. You always did, you always will.
You've always been like this for me — soft, a bit pathetic. I love this thing about you. I love that your attitude towards me is different than you attitude towards others.
You caught up to me, outside of my class. You were waiting for me. The fact warmed my heart like a fucking prairie fire, but I dared not show it on my face. I pretended to be unfazed, but then you caught my hand. And smiled. And all my defenses came crumbling down.
"A little birdie told me that you still think of me, after all," You said, quietly, a hesitant smile on your face. I wondered why your smile seemed so different today.
"The little birdie was right," I replied. "I think of you, everyday, El."
"Do you wanna catch up today?" You inquired, pulling back a little, and that's when I noticed your uniform. You were on your way to the cheering session.
"I would love to," I answered honestly, smiling. I felt a bit relieved, if I was telling the truth. You hadn't left me. Not completely, at least.
"Cupcakes?"
"Cupcakes." I smiled. "It is so nice—"
But you cut me off. "Perfect, then. Meet me at the park, at our usual spot? I'll bring the cupcakes. Zion is waiting for me and I'm in a rush, so see ya later?"
Bitterness flooded my mouth. But I nodded. "See ya later. Bye, El."
"Bye, Kay!" You said, waving at me before sprinting towards Zion, who looked at you like you were the greatest thing this place had to offer.
I had never seen him smile so wide, so genuinely, but here he was, rolling his eyes and grinning at something you said so hard that even I felt the ache of being completely replaced. I followed you out to the field, where I saw Zion and Eli sit next to each other in a comfortable silence, cheering for you at your practice. Someday, I used to be the one standing there, clapping for you.
"There you are!" Allison chirped as she caught up to me. "Where have you been?"
I smiled at her, leaning in and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She blushed, and I was glad that I still had this effect on someone. "Nothing much, just reminiscing," I said, slowly, my eyes glossing over the frame of you for a split second before I turned back towards Allison, flashing her a lopsided grin. "I have missed you deeply today."
