I stared through the windshield of my truck as I followed my mom and step-dad back to La Push where I had been years ago when mom and her husband, Old Quil, got married. I had met my step-brother and his friends, Jacob and Embry. Quil was cool.
We were the same age and liked the same things. We used to text contantly and talked on the phone at least twice a week. A few months ago, he stopped talking to me all the time. When I called, he made excuses, saying he was busy or something. My Mom wouldn't tell me anything...
We pulled into the driveway and as I put the truck in park, several boys came outside. God, they were huge! They were all super tall and buff, had short hair, and some weird tattoo on their shoulders. I looked a little different from the last time the boys saw me all those years ago. Let's just say, Southern girls could have peircings, too.
I had several; two small studs on my ear cartilage, a rose on my lobe, and two more diamonds just above that, a nose and lip ring, and a tongue ring. I kept them simple, nothing flashy. I also had my navel pierced. I stepped out of the truck.
I wore a long sleeve button up denim shirt, ripped jeans, and my favorite turquoise FatBaby camoflauge boots. I grabbed a few bags from the backseat and went to the porch.
"Uh, I could use some help when y'all stop starin' at me," I said, my accent coming out strong. I had known these boys but now I could barely tell who was who.
"Oh, yeah," one boy said. He blushed and motioned for another boy to help him.
"Come on, honey. I'll show you your room. Bring the furniture up here, boys!" Mom led me into the house and up the stairs, stopping at the last door in the hallway. I opened it and smiled. It was empty, but looks like mom got me a new bed. Four-poster King size. Definitely bigger than the twin my dad had me sleeping in.
The boys moved in my dresser, vanity, TV, bedside tables, and bookshelf. I felt bad for them... They had to listen to me ordering them to rearrange everything at least twice. When they finished, I followed them downstairs. We all stood there awkwardly. I tried to play it cool.
"So, who are y'all, again?" I placed my hands on my hips and cocked my head to the side.
"Honey, you remember Quil's friends!" My mom said from the kitchen to my right.
"You mean Quil, my step-brother who doesn't return my calls or texts?" I smiled sweetly and sat on the couch.
"Anna-May..." Mom said in warning.
"Sorry. So?"
"I'm Jake, remember? I live two houses down." I remembered. I couldn't fake it anymore and I smiled.
"Just kiddin'. I remember." I hugged Jacob. "Quil." I narrowed my eyes at him and he looked sad. "Embry..." I didn't want to look Embry Call in the eyes.
He had broken my heart...
