I tried to avoid Embry as we sat at a table close to the wooded area next to the school. I sat between Jacob and Quil. I felt eyes on me, so I looked up to see Embry staring at me with this vacant look on his face. I stared into his eyes and he smiled. He was so...cute.

      "Guys."

The corners of my mouth turned up. I had missed Embry, honestly. That summer, when my mom and Old Quil got married, I hadn't seen my mom in a year. But my dad thought I needed to go to the wedding.

I had arrived at the airport in Seattle, meeting my mom in the lobby with my bags. She smiled and wrapped me in a hug. I was hesitant. On the ride back to La Push, she told me all about her new fiancé. I was actually looking forward to meeting him.

Then she told me he had a son about my age and I was even happier. My dad had never so much as dated a woman with kids my age so I never had anything close to a sibling. When we got to the house, I looked down at my outfit.

I was like thirteen years old. I was wearing a knee length yellow and white summer dress. Kind of little-girlish, but my dad didn't want me growing up... We got out and mom took my bags into the house. I followed. I was immediately nervous.

       "Anna!"

I stepped into the house and there were several people. A man in a wheelchair and a boy that looked to be his son sat close to the hallway. Two other boys sat on the ocuch and an older man stood from a recliner in the corner. He walked over to me and hugged me.

He was Old Quil. He introduced me to everyone, including his son Quil. And Jacob and Billy Black. Then Embry Call... As soon as I looked into that boys brown eyes, I knew this was going to be a long summer...

"Anna May Calhoun!" I jerked my gaze away from Embry to see Quil staring at me.

"Huh?" I smiled sheepishly and he laughed.

"Think you could stop staring at Embry long enough to talk to the rest of us?" Jacob said. I stuck my tongue out at him and blushed.

"Okay, so, who has classes with me?" I drawled. Quil was about to answer when a group of girls walked up. They weren't preppy, but they looked like the girls I had to deal with back home. They were all kind of short with shoulder length black hair, brown eyes, and tan skin.

"Hey, boys. Who's your friend?" The girl in the front eyed me.

"This is my step-sister, Anna-May." Quil put his hand on my shoulder. I smiled and one of the girls snorted.

"Hm. Anyway, we're having a party tonight. You boys are invited." She winked and put her hand on Embry's shoulder. I stood up, slamming my hands on the table.

"What the hell is your problem, Barbie?" I said loudly, earning looks from the groups around us.

"Excuse me?" She narrowed her eyes. "What is all that shit in your face? Looks like someone shot you a shit load of times." She laughed and her friends followed. I didn't care about the fact that she was talking about my piercings. She should see the tattoo...

"Original. Look, I'm not playing games, little girl. Now go away." I sat back down and stared at her hand, which was rubbing Embry's shoulder. Embry caught my stare and stood up, pushing her hand away.

"LeAnn, would you go away? Nobody over here likes you, obviously. And stop being a bitch to Anna." He was in her face and Jake tugged on his arm until he sat down. The girl scoffed and led her friends away. I smiled at him and he returned it.

//////////

School went by fast. One of the guys was in every class with me and we ate lunch together. I had missed them so much. Even Embry... Especially Embry. He had broken my heart that summer, and I wasn't ready to forgive him, but I could still be friends with him... Right?

That night, I helped mom cook for the guys. Apparently, they ate like dogs. Old Quil came into the kitchen then.

"Hey, dad," I said quietly. He stopped short and looked at me. I thought I had given him a heart attack.

"Anna." He smiled and hugged me. He may be old enough to be my grandfather, but he was my dad now... We had just finished the food and set the table when everyone burst through the door.

"Oh, my goodness! I need to change!" I ran up the stairs and stripped from the shorts and T-shirt encrusted with food and took a quick shower. I dressed in a Monsoon tie-front top with a crochet back, dark denim shorts, and my lime green FatBaby's.

Literally, those boots make up 80% of my shoes. The other 20% are flip-flops. I loosely curled my hair and put on a sunflower headband. I opened my jewelry box and searched for the sterling silver wolf necklace and put it on. I dabbed on blue eyeshadow and I was done. I smiled at the mirror and jogged downstairs.

"Anna-May! Glad you finally graced us with your presence," my mom said, dragging me to the table. I sat between Leah and Seth. My mom and I had prepared a feast of steaks, salad, steamed vegetables, cookies, and I had made my signature muffins. They were a recipe from my Grandma Calhoun.

She had taught me to make them when I was younger. They were huge muffins with cinnamon dough and blueberries in them. They were amazing and a family recipe.

"Oh, my gosh, Anna! These muffins might be better than mine!" Emily exclaimed, biting into a muffin.
