After dinner, a bunch of us opted to go to the beach. There was still an hour of daylight left, so Leah and I went upstairs to change. I chose a multi print Flamenco long line bikini top, Agent Provocateur Dakotta black bikini bottoms, and pulled on black track shorts.
Southern girls could have expensive taste! My dad didn't understand that I wanted a simple lifestyle, like my friends at school. He didn't understand a lot about me... I tossed Leah a pink bikini and grabbed my phone and speakers from the dresser and we bounded down the stairs.
"Y'all ready?" I said breathlessly as we reached the living room. Leah had pulled on a tank top and sweat pants. She definitely didn't like revealing her body. They all looked at us and Embry stood up quickly, rubbing his palms on the side of his basketball shorts.
"Yeah, let's go. You two took long enough," Seth said, jogging out the door.
"Where's our adult supervision?" I asked.
"Sam, Emily, Old Quil, and your mom went to a movie in Seattle. They'll be back pretty late," Jacob said.
I smiled and walked outside with them. Our little group walked through the woods and toward the beach. I fell behind a little ways and Embry appeared next to me. I handed him the speakers and smirked."Carry that, please, dear."
"Sure." He smiled and nudged my hand with his.
"So, how've you been, Embry?" I asked seriously.
"Good. How about you, Anna-May? Really." I looked down at my feet and avoided the question until the dirt and leaves turned to sand. Leah grabbed my hand.
"Anna, come on!" She smiled and pulled me toward the water.
"Hold on," I laughed and took the speakers from Embry, who was smiling brightly. I connected the speakers to my phone and scrolled through my playlist. Just then, two figures walked toward us. Paul and some girl. She was gorgeous and kind of looked like Jacob.
"Oh, hey, Anna. This is my sister, Nova. Nova, this is Quil's step-sister, Anna-May Calhoun. She just moved here from Louisiana," Jake said, hugging his sister. She smiled and side hugged me.
"Great to meet you," she said. "We brought party favors!" She and Paul set down an ice chest and opened it. Beer. Oh my goodness, how I missed my alcohol. We Southerner's like to drink. I grabbed one and popped the top.
"Do you know how long it's been since I've had a beer? My dad forbid them after a little incident last summer." I smiled and Nova laughed. Then I heard my favorite song blasting through the speakers.
"Leah, dance with me!" I jumped up and dragged the girl to the sand. She laughed and I took my shorts off, throwing them at someone. We ran toward the water, everyone laughing behind us.
"The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful, stop me and steal my breath!"
"And emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky, never revealing their depth," Leah sang after me. We jumped into the water and laughed.
"You two are crazy. And drunk," Jake laughed, coming after us.
"Embry, come carry me," I said loudly, pouting. Everyone turned and looked at him, giggling as he blushed. He stood and jogged toward me. God, he was muscular. He picked me up and I wrapped my arms around his neck. After a few minutes, our group grew, then dispersed with their girlfriends.
Paul and Nova walked down the beach, holding hands. Jared met up with some girl named Kim and they went swimming with Quil and Leah. And I sat there with Embry, my eyes closed and my head on his stomach. I felt a hand stroking my hair and I sat up.
"Embry..."
"Anna, I--"
"Stop. Don't ever touch me again." I could feel the tears coming. Anna-May Calhoun does not cry. I got up and ran toward the woods. Hands caught me by the waist and turned me around, holding me to him.
"Stop! You broke my heart, Embry Call. You broke my fucking heart." I beat his chest with my fists and tried to run. I didn't want to look at his face. When I did, tears were running down his cheeks.
"Anna, I love you." I was speechless. Before I could say anything, he crushed his lips to mine. For a second I was stunned. I was frozen. I remembered that summer...
I had been in La Push for a week. My mom's wedding was on a Saturday and I was getting ready. I was probably the youngest maid of honor in history. I remembered my dress was floor length and a pretty purple with a red ribbon around my waist. I had never felt more like a girl in my life!
I can't believe Quil and his friends would see me in this... Especially Embry. We had been hanging out a lot in that week. As I walked down the aisle with Quil, I could feel stares. Several people smiled and took pictures. Flash forward two weeks after the wedding. I was at the beach with Quil.
We were kicking sand everywhere. I was so happy. I know we were kids, but Embry had told me he loved me the day before. And we had kissed. My first kiss. Quil and I were walking and he stopped Suddenly. I turned to look at him. I asked him what was wrong and he was hesitant, but told me we needed to go home.
I grabbed his arm and said we should go cliff diving at least once before we went back. I turned and I saw it... Embry was with a girl. And they were holding hands. And then he leaned down and kissed her.
